Hawaii on my honeymoon.

I’ve been on several amazing ones, both young and old, and I wouldn’t know how to say one was best. Most of them involved going to Europe and exploring several/many places at leisure for a considerable amount of time.

One year we were able to reserve a two bedroom motel room for an entire week. We went to Disneyland and California Adventure. Every day was a delight for the entire family.
Then, on the last night, one (autistic) child was promised fireworks after missing them every other night. Due to a mistake in timing, he missed them.
He proceeded to throw the unparalleled fit of all time.
That week was the both the best and worst vacation ever.

That’s hard, because trips back east from California to my original home base in the Boston area over a 44-year period have been very important to me. Maybe not always rankable on a best-to-worst scale, though.

I guess I would have to say my trip to Scotland in 1998. I had longed all my life, from young childhood, to visit Scotland, and decades later I went. I loved being there, loved everything about it, and still cherish the hope of one day going back.

On further thought, though, the truly best ones might have been just over the hill here, at a special spot in the Santa Cruz mountains that my late husband and I returned to several times a year, year after year. We stayed in a peaceful, woodsy little cottage under the redwoods by the San Lorenzo River and felt that we were far, far away from anything that troubled us. Those are the memories I will treasure the most, I think.

I also have more pictures of leaves and bark in all seasons than probably most anybody else on this site.

Five years ago we travelled round Europe by train visiting Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Innsbruck and Venice. I have many happy memories of that trip.

A cross-country road trip out West here in the US was amazing. Planes just don’t give you a feel for the sheer size of our country like driving does.

A couple years after I got divorced, I was driving the kids across country so they could spend the summer with their mother. My daughter was about 8 and my boys were 5. We drove from Cleveland Ohio to San Francisco California. We took several days to make the trip. We saw many things along the way. We stopped at Wall Drug and I got interviewed by local TV and my kids all got a spot on the local news. We saw the Badlands. We saw Mt Rushmore. We saw Crazy Horse Mountain. We camped out one night and had a pancake breakfast the next morning. We stopped in Yellowstone park and saw bear, moose, bison, geysers and all sorts of great things. On the way back (after dropping the kids off), I stopped in a casino for the very first time in Reno NV. I won over $1600. The next morning I stopped in a truck stop for breakfast and played video poker at the table. Won another $50.

I got quality time with the kids, saw a lot of amazing things, and the trip was paid for. Doesn’t get much better.

Hard to pick one, so I will choose top three.

1. Alaskan cruise.
2. Catskills in NY.
3. VT and Quebec (that was one vacation).

I loved Italy, but I was younger and I appreciate travel so much more now, I would like to go back. Bavaria was wonderful and beautiful, but same thing I was so young. I’ve been so many places that I have enjoyed, Japan, Scotland, Vancouver, Michigan, just to name a few.

I live on vacation. I walk out of my door and I am in sunshine and palm trees and that always feels like vacation to me. Any day I can drive to the beach or down to Disney or to a tourist attraction. Staycation is not the same as vacation, but I still appreciate being able to take a moment and being happy to be here.

One of my most memorable was in the summer of 2012 when my two best friends and I drove down to SoCal and stayed there for a few days for my 21st birthday. It was probably my least-thought-out vacation with almost no planning ahead, but somehow that added to the perfection of it and I’ll never forget it, particularly watching the sunset over the ocean at Laguna Beach the night of my birthday.

I’ve had other memorable trips with my family, including visiting Turkey and Morocco in 2013, but I think my all-time favorite might’ve been the one my best friend and I took in the summer of 2009 after high school when we decided to tour Europe together for a week. Although I’ve had a lot of good vacations, I think the ones where I’ve just been with a close friend and we had total freedom to do whatever we wanted have been my favorites.

I’ve had a bunch of great ones, so it’s hard to pick one as “the best.” Ireland was great. Hawaii when I was 13 was great. California was great. Others were great because of who I was with, not necessarily the destination, although that added to it. Cape Cod with my parents, when my daughter was little. Washington DC with a boyfriend, when I was about 20.

Every single vacation is still held dearly in my memory. They have all had their pros and cons. If forced to choose, it would be the week in Marrakech, Morocco. It was my 1st time in Africa. I flew there with my British partner. We chose a riad (independent B&B that was a renovated open-air structure).

The whole adventure was surreal. Breakfast was served on the rooftop of the riad while we watched the sun rise and planned our day. Each day brought adventure. Late afternoon, we’d successfully attempt to make our way back to the comfort of the riad, where we cleaned off the grime of walking all over and settle down to a delicious traditional meal prepared by the owners and staff.

The return flight to the UK was interesting. Most of the travelers stayed in hotels on the outskirts of the main part where we were and moaned about suffering from food poisoning. We paid a little more, and feel blessed for our decision. We got the real experience.
