How can you learn IT from an instructors with accents?

Asked by Strict_xer (4points) November 14th, 2021

I want to take a IT course from a boot camp but I’m afraid I won’t understand the instructor because they have a foreign English accent.

You don’t have an accent, right?

Strict_xer's avatar

No, I’m not a foreign English speaker.

In America students have been dealing with this for lots of years.

they have a foreign English accent

No, I’m not a foreign English speaker.

So does that mean you aren’t a native English speaker, or you are a native English speaker but have a hard time understanding English with a different accent?

Accents? Like the people from north Idaho as compared to the people from south Idaho? Among themselves, even people with accents have accents that are different from others who speak the same language.
You’ll manage. Like people from the northern United States as opposed to the people from the southern United States. And people in the military all have their own way of saying things that are different, accent or no accent.

@SnipSnip @kritiper The way the OP is saying it makes me suspicious if English is their native language at all, hence my question.

I’ve known people who took university classes with instructors who spoke in a very strong foreign accent. The combination of poor teaching style, very challenging coursework and a strong accent made it impossible or almost impossible for them to do well. One of my friends switched out her class for a different instructor.

It can be a deal breaker, but it doesn’t have to be. An excellent teacher will find ways to make up for a strong accent so their students will still be able to do well in their class.

@Strict_xer Speaking for myself, I am very hard of hearingg and it is nearly impossible. On that same note when a persom with a heavy accent answers my call to a business they are often insulted when I ask for someone who speaks English.

In a high-tech environment, there are people from all over, and—at least here in Northern California—many with Asian accents. You can learn to filter what you hear by paying attention to the typical transformations of English pronunciation by the speakers in their language group.

When someone with a strong accent answers the phone at a business and I can’t understand their speech, I usually say, “Could you please speak a little more slowly? I’m having trouble hearing you.”
