Will Russia invade the Ukraine?

Asked by flutherother (34519points) December 16th, 2021

Putin has amassed enough troops on the Ukrainian border to launch a successful invasion. It appears he wants to reclaim the Ukraine for Russia. Do you think he will, possibly even over the Christmas period?

You can certainly bet on that.

I hope it’s just sabre rattling, testing President Biden. I wouldn’t want to start the New Year of the verge of WW III.

I think @Nomore_lockout is right. Puting is looking weaker at home, for a variety of reasons, so he is inventing situations that make him look ‘strong’.

But with Russia, you can never be sure. For all we know, Trump is telling Puting what to do, so that Biden will look bad.

@Nomore_lockout we have been on the brink of WW3 since aroun 2000.

It’s entirely possible, though I suspect it is more of a test. China threatened Taiwan to test the US to see what Biden’s response would be. It was substandard at best. When that happened, Russia didn’t condemn China, they actually supported them. Now Russia is threatening Ukraine. I suspect it will be, again, to see how Biden responds. And you can bet China will not condemn Russia either.

Despite what our media says, Biden does not present a strong presence to the rest of the world. I suspect Russia and China are working together to destroy the US. And Biden is making it very easy for them.

If there were a fear of WWIII breaking out, I don’t think you have anything to fear. I really don’t believe Biden or Harris have the wit to get into a war.

It seems likely. I think they are merely waiting for the opportune time. They may actually be coordinating with China so that the invasion of Ukraine and Taiwan happen at the same time.

I believe that incursion or invasion could happen. Likely by the end of January.

@seawulf575, I’m going to differ with you on this one.
I think there is no chance of Putin putting in with China.

I think neither actually wants to face each other or us. I think China would rather syphon away American assets as they have been for some time. They are more likely to try to nudge the other one into battle with us. That would weaken two of the three super powers, leaving the third to pick up the pieces of both, or at least one.

However, both are definitely flexing on the world stage.

It has been determined where Europe is throwing their dance card. What remains is to mind read India. I think the answer would leave all of them befuddled.

I don’t think so, because I think it would be a very foolish move, and I don’t see Putin thinking that it would make sense.

I think the World must pray that no such invasion takes place and pray for a diplomatic solution.

This is the closest that we have been to war with Russia and its allies since the Cuban crisis in 1962.

Putin is a war monger and an evil man. Neither does he have the slightest regard for human life or freedom.

Gorbachev, Reagan and Thatcher did everything to try and succeed to end the cold war but Putin is determined to start it all over again and is I am afraid succeeding.

No idea. But I’m glad the US President is not a pretentious leader, a coward, a sexual molester, a racist and a douchebag.

@elbanditoroso, I’d say since 1962, the Cuban missile crisis. With a little time out for Gorbachev, glasnost and perestroika.

Putin favors anything that will result in the destabilization of the West. He still craves to make us pay for the fall of the Soviet Union. DJT was and still is his trump card.

Putin doesn’t have enough going in his favor to take on any other major force. While grocery stores are better stocked than forty years ago, but Russia lacks the cohesion needed to pull off a full scale war.
