How hot do you like your tap water?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) December 20th, 2021

My hubs installed a tankless water heater. He did a beautiful job, too. But the hot water isn’t hot enough for me. If I fill the sink with only hot water for washing dishes, but I can reach into the sink for a plate, or whatever, it isn’t hot enough for me. It’s a good temp for washing, but I want to rinse those puppies in scaulding hot water!
So he needs to adjust the temperature.

For dishes at least 95f. or even a little hotter.

I believe my tank is set at 120 but I do always mix it with cool.

Dutchess_III's avatar

That’s what I do too @janbb. But I’ve perfected the juggling act it takes to rinse the dishes in the scaulding 120⁰ straight.

I have my new hybrid water heater set at 120°F

Hot enough to not be bearable for more than a few seconds, but not hot enough to cause actual burns.

About 130 degrees. It’s a 40 gallon tank but I don’t like to run out of hot water while taking a shower.

It’s a tankless.

50C (which is about 122f).

Do dishes seriously need to be rinsed in scalding hot water? This is a real question.

kritiper's avatar

@anniereborn No. They just need to dry thoroughly.

You got hot water now?

WAY TO GO WOMAN!! Tell your husband he can stay. But as far as adjusting the temp, it really depends on the size of the burner relative to the delivery coil. I’ve seen several tankless systems in houses we’ve listed for sale. They are economical, but with only a few exceptions buyers wanted them switched out because of temp/capacity issues.

Be careful, since you have small children coming to visit, if the temp of the water is too hot, children can get scalded.

In the County I worked for, two children were scalded to death when their mother was passed out and they were left in the tub with the hot water running. People may say “this can’t happen to me” but better safe than sorry.

Dutchess_III's avatar

When I had a daycare we had to adjust our water heaters to a lower setting for that reason @jca.

@anniereborn, no I suppose they don’t. I suppose I could wash and rinse them in cold water even, but that don’t seem sanitary to me. Scaulding seems sanitary to me!

Our water heater is set to 120°F. When I rinse our plates, I don’t stick my hands under the stream so I don’t get scalded. Since you can adjust your system temp, you can try different temps over several days to see what you like.

Rick’s working on it now.

@Dutchess_III: A good friend does HVAC and if he adjusts my hot water heater’s temperature, it takes about a minute. It’s just an adjustment.

Dutchess_III's avatar

He had to kill the lockouts that wouldn’t let you change it via the up and down arrows on the panel. I can change it myself now.
It’s set at 130.

My son came home from shop class one day, years ago. Apparently they had learned how to adjust the tanks, because I suddenly had HOT HOT water!

janbb's avatar

Sounds like a tankless task! (yuck, yuck)

cookieman's avatar

So long as she tells Rick, “Tank you very much”, she won’t get in hot water.

RocketGuy's avatar

Lukewarm reception, I see. She’s gonna simmer on that for a little while.

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL! You guys think you’re so hot!

cookieman's avatar

Apparently we’re just all wet. I’m such a drip.

Dutchess_III's avatar

130! PERFECT!!!

Now he has to do some plumbing under the kitchen sink. It’s leaking.
