How does the James Webb Telescope rank in the list of mankind's greatest achievements?

The more I learn about the James Webb Telescope, the more amazed I become. There are so many factors that had to be accounted for in order for this thing to be launched and start answering some of science’s biggest questions. It’s like a symphonic masterpiece of engineering with so many intricate pieces working in harmony, designed and built by a team spanning the globe.

Where would you rank this among other amazing accomplishments of mankind like the development of vaccines, the creation of the Large Hadron Collider, the International Space Station, etc.?

It’s a miracle of planning, design and engineering but how it will ultimately be ranked depends on how successful it is and what it will discover. I am personally very curious.

No. it’s derivative. It isn’t new science or new technology – it is an extension and improvment on old technology.

Don’t get me wrong —it’s pretty cool and powerful. But it doesn’t rank with the printing press, with penicillin and other antibiotics, flush toilets, and the internet.
