~Excellent marbling, but I could not finish a whole one.

I worked the midnight shift at a convenience store for tourists all around the world, and noticed that Americans had excellent self confidence.

The Australian assessment is fairly accurate. Americans are also stubborn when they think they are right.

Caravanfan's avatar

@filmfann It’s not being stubborn when you are, in fact, always right.

Not team players?!? You’re welcome for WWII, Aussie.

Americans invented: drainage system to direct sewage away from populated streets.

The lighting rod.

Assembly lines.

Airplanes

The internet.

We might have some flaws (who doesn’t?) but we are a strong, beautiful nation.
The current divisiveness must be squelched, or we will not move forward, but we must never lose the right to speak freely.
Americans may come off as snobbish to some, but it is simply a confidence which comes from living life free of many social/political restrictions.

The Australians are kinder than they need be. @Patty Melt, we are by no means the United States which pulled Australia’s bacon from the fire 70 plus years ago. The land settled by convicts now finds its citizens far more secure and content than ourselves. They managed to solve their gun problems, insure the entirety of their population and now gape in consternation on our plight as we now spiral down the drain.

And they’ll be damned lucky if we don’t suck them down with us.

My comments were directed at the person in the article provided by OP. I am well aware that most Aussies are not so rude concerning Americans. I stand by all I said.

Given their current status, not at all our fault.
We have every reason to be proud of our country, and to fight to retain its construct.

They’re probably not way off base…given their view of the world. Yes, Americans are loud and obnoxious. I can see that in the US. Yes, we have a lot of guns and some other countries see that as a problem. But let’s consider that the people in the cited article that are saying we have a gun problem are in a country that set up “detention centers” for their own citizens because they were unvaccinated. Guess when the government doesn’t have to fear an armed populace they can pretty much do what they want. I’m a little confused by the idea that Americans don’t know their place in the world. We are probably the youngest major country in the world, and have been looked to for guidance and support more than most. So when everyone is clamoring for you to help or give aid, what does that tell us about our place in the world? Unless the person making that claim truly believes it is our place to just shut up and give? And what does that say about the attitude of that person?

As with all articles like this, it is destined to get skewed answers. Most people in Most countries don’t know a lot about the details of other countries. You get your information from snippets on “news channels” that skew things.

America is a wealthy uncle who is brash and over confident but has a heart of gold and we love him and we can’t tell you how sorry we are to hear of his psychotic breakdown.

I think the article sums up what some Aussie friends have told me; they say they don’t like American tourists much, but they love the US and have a great time when they are here, including their interactions with Americans.

I know a ton of Europeans who love spending time in America, some even own houses here. They say some of their friends back home think they are crazy to go to the US, but all of the people who think that never come here, so it’s just what they believe it to be like here. Aussies are similar I think.

It’s probably true a lot of Americans think America is great or even the center of the universe, but plenty of us know the US isn’t the center of the universe. We had a long history of having a lot of power and prosperity, we have a long history of people clamoring to come here.

The US is full of people who wanted to kiss the ground when they arrived in America as immigrants, and thanked God they were able to have a life here. They passed that sentiment to their children. You have to understand the environment over time and the generational effect. We are one of the first nations to have separation of church and state. It’s really difficult to think the country might be spiraling downward; I mean psychologically difficult. Expressions like our president is the leader of the free world are used all over the world not just in the US. I’ve never been fond of that expression.

Any nation feeling cocky maybe should check itself. If some Aussies are feeling superior to Americans then maybe they are guilty of the very thing they are accusing Americans of. There are good and bad people everywhere. There is QAnon type crazy in many countries, I’d bet money it exists in Australia. The US is a large nation, with a large population, and a small percentage of people in the US is still a huge number. The expression don’t spit in the wind comes to mind.

Most people I know from outside of the US who actually spend time here think the US is amazing for customer service and that Americans are a little ignorant but fun to be with and want to enjoy life, are helpful, and are very open and trusting. I think that’s overall true.

America is possibly moving into another part of its life cycle, we’ll see.

Yay, stereotypes. Aren’t we all really American, deep down?

Given how geographically and culturally diverse the US is, I’m always hesitant to agree with any single characterization of “Americans”. They tend to focus on extremes and often the lowest common denominators.

Similar profiles of other nation’s peoples could be (and have been) made that would be equally unfair.

Ironic coming from an Aussie, in my view. Considering I once heard several New Zealanders dismiss Aussies as “American Wannabes”.

There is a term “ugly American” that has been around for a while. It even has a dictionary entry It originates from a book and a movie based on it starring Marlon Brando. I think of Donald Trump as the embodiment of the ugly American. Fortunately, we are not all like that.

I’ve had direct personal experience as an American. I think I’m well qualified because I look great and I’m not too smart.

It’s an okay job – but the hours suck, benefits are a joke, and management needs retraining. So I’m updating my resume’.

Just not sure I want to relocate.

Some good, some bad, just like residents in every other country in the world.

My first thought upon reading the question was that yes, Americans think they’re ‘all that’. But that doesn’t mean I’m anti-America, just that I’m sometimes embarrassed by us. I’ve read comments from other countries and they pretty much have the same opinion.

Environment shapes people.
We, as a nation of people who are descended from people who either escaped, or were stolen from, their home country. The country was in its infancy, helpless, and learning to survive.
This country is now nearing its teen stage. It feels awkward, but wants to be cool. During infancy, so much growth takes place just to get to the walking stage. So now we are proud of ourselves, but also becoming aware we are surrounded by grandparents.

We are being awkward, but we will be amazing after the ‘tween stage reveals our breathtaking beauty. Of course we will be amazing. We are from the best genes.

If we strut, so what?
