Any recommendations for good books on the history of Scotland?

I can pick random books in the library or Kindle, but I’m wondering if anybody has any experience.

Magnus Magnusson’s “Scotland:the Story of a Nation” is worth a look and it is quite readable. It was published in 2000 so isn’t right up to date.

@flutherother Thanks! I’ll be spending most of my time in Orkney and Shetland Islands with only a few days in Edinb so it should be fine.

@Caravanfan, oh, I envy you that trip! When are you going? My one journey to Scotland was deeply excellent. I did not get to see the islands, though. I’d have loved to, but it wasn’t feasible at the time. I used to subscribe to Scottish Life magazine and daydream over it.

They are fascinating islands. I hope you have a great trip. There are a few books on their history but none that I’m familiar with.
