Would it make sense to schedule Nuclear War?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) March 17th, 2022 from iPhone

Maybe the enemy countries can see that unfortunately mutually assured destruction is certain no matter what, so they might give the world a day or so to say their farewells.

What? It’s not certain.

@Ltryptophan How old are you? I remember the Reagan years. They were much scarier. I remember nuclear air raid drills in elementary school.

I remember the Kennedy years. Those were pretty scary too. I remember teachers showing us pictures of mushroom clouds, so we’d be sure to know one if we saw one, and giving us solemn advice: If you see a cloud like this, don’t go toward it.

Interesting suggestion, though, @Ltryptophan. A lot of movies have explored the question of what would happen if global mass destruction were coming and word got out. Typically things did not go well. Instead: panic, hysteria, deranged behavior, suicides, even looting. And flocking to houses of worship by people who were nonbelievers ten minutes ago. People did not just offer calm good-byes to their dear ones. Do you think we would do better than that?

Regardless of whether it’s scheduled, nuclear war doesn’t make sense.

It’s analogous to a suicide bomber warning that he’ll destroy the world and himself, if he doesn’t get Ukraine.

I’ll be busy. Tell them to start without me.

At the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis we were told to expect a “four minute warning” of a nuclear attack. I remember we were told to write an article for the school magazine on the subject of what we would do in those four minutes.

It was secret at the time, but this is what we would have heard in the event of an attack

The first President I remember was Eisenhower although I was too young to remember his politics. My Dad had a LOT of respect for Ike so I don’t remember feeling scared or threatened by him. When Kennedy went into office, I was a bit older & more aware of what was going on around us. I spent a LOT of time under my desk with my arms over my head…just in case!!! I worried a lot because the schools taught us that we should be worried, yet I come home to a dad that had NO interest in installing a bomb shelter…just in case. He always said that by time the bomb hit that it would be too late!!! He felt that even IF we survived the blast & hit the shelter that it would take too many years to clear out the air & the soil & that we’d die a very slow, painful death. I think that scared me even more than sheltering under my desk!!! I wouldn’t want to know when the bomb would be dropped & I can think of only one narcissist who would receive pleasure in doing such a thing!!!
