Is it a good idea to learn how to cook from scratch?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24461points) March 30th, 2022

Like how to cook with flour and sugar? Does baking from scratch taste better? Do you save money?

Where does one start? Please suggest Amazon books or YouTube videos on getting started baking from scratch?

Baking requires tools and practice (Baking requires a real oven not a microwave).

It is fun. Find a local junior college, I’ve taken several classes at one.

Invest in some cook books, measuring spoons, cups.

I now buy most of my cook books from Amazon and keep them on my Kindle. I find that they are significantly cheaper that way too

If you don’t have an oven, you might consider getting a toaster oven. It’s not as good as a full size oven, but works for one person

It’s definately healthier to eat fresh foods, but if the world goes to crap you should know how to survive on basics. :) It’s fun and relaxing, plus people love fresh gifts.

It involves quite a bit of clean up.
With cooking shows and videos, they tend to have ingredients premeasured into individual cups and bowls. That is unnecessary. It simply saves watch time. Even so, there will be dishes to clean.

It is important to follow instructions carefully. For instance, dry ingredients are best mixed together before adding to wet ingredients.

It involves a lot of ingredients you probably don’t keep on hand. Because of that, if you don’t do baking on a regular basis, it isn’t really going to be a good fit.
Here is something simple and delicious you might want to try.

Keep in mind, shopping lots of ingredients will seem expensive at first, but once you have them, most will last for many other recipes.

Totally worth it. You should know that when baking you can’t improvise as easily as when cooking. Also, check the expiration dates of baking soda, baking powder and yeast. Muffins, quick breads, and icebox cookies would be a good place to start.
