Is there any hope for Mariupol to resist against Russia?

Asked by luigirovatti (2826points) April 18th, 2022

Russia’s military says it controls almost all of Mariupol, while Ukraine’s Azov Battalion is still holding out in Azovstal, a huge steelworks overlooking the Azov Sea. Moscow issued an ultimatum (with the deadline set for yesterday, I might add), but Ukraine replied it wil fight to the end. Humanitarian corridors still have not been opened. If Russia captures Mariupol, it’ll control a vast swathe of southern and eastern Ukraine.

At this point, I have faith that the Ukrainians will do what they say they are going to do!!! Russia is still reacting old school style. They strut & they preen, then they get their ass kicked. The Ukrainians don’t seem to be fooling around. They just say BACK OFF & then proceed to Get’r Done!!!

Ukraine will do there best and they are doing pretty good. I even heard they attacked a fuel station 20 miles in Russia. Russia should probably get out of Ukraine.

Sadly, I don’t think so.

Most estimates put the number of Ukrainian troops in Mariupol still able to fight at under 3,000. They’ve been squeezed into an area less than 11 square miles, facing over 20,000 Russian troops controlling more than 90% of the city. They’ve had no delivery of food, ammunition, or medical supplies for nearly 30 days. Ukrainian forces outside Mariupol have been unable to breakthrough and reinforce remaining fighters, and the civilian population has been devastated.

Holding out has been a heroic act of defiance against brutal Russian aggression, but it’s likely to end within days.

^^ That’s what I’m seeing too. Beginning to wonder if the West needs to engage more militarily. And I am a passionate hater of war.

I guess the question left to ask is: is it true the Donbass will be conquered easily once Mariupol falls?

@luigirovatti – That’s less certain I think. Most military experts seem to believe a stalemate is the likely outcome.

There is hope if they can be resupplied.

Although the fighters are still being supplied by other countries with arms I am afraid it is only a matter of time before Mariupol is taken despite the unequaled of bravery of the Ukrainian resistance.

Those extremely brave fighters deserve the very highest of honours their and other countries can give.

I am praying that the Russian people discover what the inhuman Putin and his cohorts are doing by bombing and killing innocent civilians and waging war on a peaceful nation and I hope they will rise up and take their country back from the moron called Putin, hand him and his henchmen over to the courts for trial for genocide and inhumanities.

If/when found guilty they should be handed over to a country or state who still has the death penalty.

I plan on donating to Ukraine. We take cans and there tabs and get two different pay checks. One is for us and the other goes to someone who take they money and uses it for the greater good. We plan on taking the money to a Ukraine support group.
