How can I stop craving sugar? (see details).

Asked by KRD (5259points) April 25th, 2022

Recently, I got badly constipated and the doctor said I would have to take Gentle lax (Miralax but by Kroger). I also had to go on the B.R.A.T diet. In case you don’t know it stands for: bananas, apple sauce, ,rice, and toast. I can have a little more though. Just not meat, a lot of dairy, and sugar. Just then my grandparents had gotten brownie bites. I just don’t know how to stop craving sugar.

One way to reduce cravings for sugars is to get off carbohydartes as much as possible. That includes most fruits that are high on the glycemic index. Instead of breads, eat low carb/high fiber tortillas.

To combat your constipation, increase your fiber with salads and cruceferous vegetables.

Not an ideal answer, but one possibility is to use artificial sweeteners, in moderation. Especially if you’re having trouble.

If my experience is anything to go off, that will actually INCREASE your cravings for sweet stuff. But again, if my experience is anything to go off, you will be able to keep that under control and reduce your sugar consumption without having to get your artificial fix every day.

If you’re under 30 (i.e. brain probably still developing a lot), you might want to do extra research before going down that road. I think some of the popular sweeteners might (maybe) affect brain development.

You might be able to find lower-glycemic sweet stuff too (like your bananas). But I’m not sure whether glycemic index is the issue in your health situation or not. I’m honestly not even sure whether the whole health industry built around the glycemic index is legit or not. But maybe it is!

If you have a lot of free time, you might be able to use my favorite anti-sugar weapon: engaging in some other form of mildly addictive behavior (like exercise, sex, videogames, sleep, yelling at people on the internet, something like that). That might sound like a joke but I’m dead serious: I eat much healthier when I’m on vacation due to reasons like that.

Obviously the best solution is to increase your willpower and slowly build good habits. But we’re all human, right?

Take it completely out of your diet. That is the ticket.

I’m confused as to why you would be directed to go on the BRAT diet if you were constipated. From what I have read, it is (or rather used to be) prescribed for people who have nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which is the opposite of constipation.

The BRAT diet:

What exactly did your doctor diagnose you with?

As far as losing the craving for sweets, eating things that are tart, or crunchy, but not sweet, instead of eating the sweet thing, after awhile, you will start craving those things instead, as long as you add in items that you like, that are good for you. Examples are: fermented foods, pickled vegetables, raw vegetables dipped in yogurt or hummus, and whole grain crackers.

Are you craving something sweet at certain periods of the day or just in general.

It may be a result of the diet change in some part. It may be hard, but if you can keep that modification up for a couple weeks, the cravings will diminish. Try to follow really good healthy eating habits of fruits, vegetables as much as possible.
Have sugars from natural sources like fruit is perfectly acceptable and can modify your craving for bad sugars to good sugars.

If it is a craving of a sweet at a certain time of the day then you may substitute it with a different snack or will power through it.

Our bodies crave these kinds of “bad” things when we aren’t fueling it properly and fully.
As always may sure you are hydrating enough as well. Rule of thumb is half you weight in ounces of water per day.

@Kardamom I have been doing better recently and can go easily now. I got constipated a week ago; I can have more things now but not to much meat or dairy and no sugar.

I was struck by the same thing. BRAT is for diarrhea.

You can avoid sweet and sugary things by not bringing them into the house. Maintain your will power for the half hour you are in the supermarket and the other 23 and a half hours will look after themselves.
