“Don’t you know? That’s the kind of job it is.”
“You’ve been doing it for sixteen years; you ought to know. How do you do it? How do you live with yourself?”
“I don’t! I live with other people. When I go home I don’t take this stuff with me, I leave it outside. But you! The way you carry it around with you, you must like it!”

“And even though the world goes on for eons and eons, you are only here for a fraction of a fraction of a second. Most of your time is spent being dead or not yet born. But while alive, you wait in vain, wasting years, for a phone call or a letter or a look from someone or something to make it all right. And it never comes or it seems to but it doesn’t really. And so you spend your time in vague regret or vaguer hope that something good will come along. Something to make you feel connected, something to make you feel whole, something to make you feel loved.”

Thus says my king: Say thou to Harry of England: Though we seemed dead, we did but sleep: advantage is a better soldier than rashness. Tell him that we could have rebuked him at Harfleur, but we thought not good to bruise an injury till it were full ripe: now we speak upon our cue, and our voice is imperial: England shall repent his folly, see his weakness, and admire or sufferance. Bid him therefore consider of his ransom; which must proportion the losses we have borne, the subjects we have lost, the disgrace we have digested; which in weight to re-answer, his pettiness would bow under. For our losses, his exchequer is too poor, for the effusion of our blood, the muster of his kingdom too faint a number; and for our disgrace, his own person kneeling at our feet, but a weak and worthless satisfaction. To this add defiance: and tell him for conclusion, he hath betrayed his followers, whose condemnation is pronounced. Thus far my lord and master. So much my office.

Or…maybe :

“I don’t want to talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.”

I’ve used both, in job interviews.

Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries.

@janbb if wordiest mattered, I’d be in love with Trump. It isn’t the amount of paint that determines a masterpiece.

@HP Yes, I’ve always though that brevity was the sould of wit.

Brevity certainly has its place. A stop sign makes a point. Its witty enough for some.

@filmfann I’m interested in what movie that quote came from. I’ve loved it as a quote for almost 30 years, but don’t remember it from a movie. It’s the name of a book from 1994 by Jon Kabat-Zinn, who also authored Full Catastrophe Living. But the book title is “Wherever You Go, There You Are”.

Blackwater_Park's avatar

“The Living Dead and the dying living are all the same. Cut from the same cloth. But disposing of dead people is a public service, whereas you’re in all sorts of trouble if you kill someone while they’re still alive.”

kruger_d's avatar

His name is Robert Paulson.

Lightlyseared's avatar

Well, that wasn’t such a chore, now, was it?

Blackwater_Park's avatar

I’m not even supposed to be here today

Some of you… were born rich and you’re going to stay rich. But here’s my advice to the rest of you: take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything, but they can’t buy backbone. Don’t let them forget it. Thank you

elbanditoroso's avatar

My name is Hedley

smudges's avatar

@filmfann Thank you! I haven’t seen that one, but I love Jonathan Banks! and Jeff Goldblum.

Caravanfan's avatar

@smudges that was my movie too

Mimishu1995's avatar

@Brian1946 no, it’s from On Dangerous Ground though now as I think of it, the quote actually fits Detective Story :P

Here is an actual quote from Detective Story:

“You’re gettin’ too superior, McLeod, a one-man army against crime. What’s eatin’ you?”
“I hate criminals. I don’t believe in coddling them.”

Caravanfan's avatar

@smudges Jonathan Banks has a really small role in the movie. You won’t even recognize him

smudges's avatar

@Caravanfan I like that – Character is what you are in the dark.

Thanks for the info!
