Did you make fun of the US Space Force?

Asked by JLeslie (65416points) May 29th, 2022 from iPhone

When it was created while Trump was in office did you make fun of it? If you did, do you still think it’s a joke? Or, do you think it’s a good idea to have a Space Force as part of the Uniformed Services?

It always seemed like a good idea to me, although I guess some of the same duties can be performed by the Air Force without creating another branch.

What are the pros and cons of having a Space Force?

You mean Space Farce??

What do you envision such Force would look like @JLeslie?

It was a name, a logo, a load of cheap merchandise and a butt of humour. I don’t know anything else it was good for. It was for space what Trump University was for education.

There are lots of devices floating around our planet. They are a grave concern these days, with solid reasoning. That alone Is enough to occupy the efforts of a full military.
It is conceivable that mining is being done on the moon, not supposed to be. If not yet, then eventually someone will try, if no authority keeps them from it.
If people think CO2 is an environment killer, let people start major mining to take place on the moon and see what happens.
Lots of people have poked fun at the notion of space alien policing, but there are many concerns which originate from home planet.
China developed a new bomb deployment system. Line of sight is no issue.

@SQUEEKY2 Well, I guess we know where you stand. Lol. Do you feel the same about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and the Public Health Service (PHS). I think of them as similar. I always thought it was odd NASA wasn’t part of the uniformed services.

@rebbel Look like? I haven’t researched it much, but I assume they use Air Force or Navy uniforms with the Space Force insignia similar to what NOAA and PHS does. I also would guess it’s a very small group of officers primarily focused on defense, our satellites, relations with other countries regarding space exploration, science, and surveillance.

I just googled. Here’s a video on the Space Force website https://www.spaceforce.mil/Multimedia/Videos/ Of course the video is part marketing and part informative. It’s short and touches on what the purpose of the Space Force is.

Here’s the Wikipedia page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Space_Force

Also, Biden doesn’t seem to be dismantling it. I realize it’s hard to get rid of something once it’s created. I wonder what the current administration thinks about it.

It probably didn’t have to have a separate branch, but I’m still ok with it reading up, and like the opportunity of Americans being able to be commissioned officers without being in the armed services main branches. I’m not clear if they are commissioned officers though and if they have rank like our military? NOAA and PHS do have military rank and benefits.

No, I didn’t make fun of it.

I make fun of everything and everyone sooner or later.

I think this one is on my list, somewhere. Give me time.

kritiper's avatar

We didn’t need it (overkill) since we have the US Air Force.

Blackwater_Park's avatar

I did not, it’s long overdue. Our satellite fleet is so critical that not having a dedicated armed forces division is idiotic.

I made fun of it because of the attempt to create a story that Trump had any kind of responsibility for creating it, and some of the fluff & hype around it, amid which the naming and logo seemed pretty funny.

The US military, particularly the Air Force, already had space or space-relevant elements, and I am not going to waste my time studying up to build my own informed opinion about whether it actually made sense, and in what ways, to organize a new branch of military service called Space Force, rather than having it continue to mainly be a branch of the Air Force.

The words “Space Force” just come across as more of a stupid joke. Could be because trump was involved. trump does not really deserve any credit for anything good he might have done while at the WH. He had caused and still actively causing more damage to this country. Along with his fanatics.

JLeslie's avatar

^^Yeah, not trying to give Trump credit even if it was a good idea to create the Space Force. I’m still not sure if it was necessary or a good idea, I just didn’t think it was preposterous.

Yes… until I heard the Powerpuff Girls are being recruited.
Can’t wait to see them in uniform… just saying…

The former Air Force Base near me (Buckley) is now officially called Buckley Space Force Base. There are (and have been) military units based there from other branches, and I think even from other allied countries. This has long been the home of the “Golf Balls”, a group of radomes, visible for miles.

WhyNow's avatar

@Strauss Great Answer… but I be would a little more hush hush! Please let me know
if you see any Powerpuff Girls wink wink.

@WhyNow I’m not sure about the Powerpuff Girls, but I cold swear I saw MojoJojo debarking the Waverider!~~

I think it’s a waste of taxpayer money and a boondoggle. ‘Nuff said.

^^Defending America is a waste of time!

Nomore_Tantrums's avatar

Defending America against what? Booger men from Planet X? I am supportive of Army Navy Air Force USMC Coast Guard. But a Space Force? What the hell for?

WhyNow's avatar

Just being in space is paramount! The government must take the initiative
before privateers take over. I changed topic.

Patty_Melt's avatar

@Nomore who said ANYTHING about little green men.
The first thing to know about protecting a periphery is to be outside that periphery.
Perhaps you have been absent from class a bunch of years. We have property beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

Boondoggle waste of money.
