Do you LOVE going to the beach?

Asked by RayaHope (7448points) July 28th, 2022

I love the sun and getting that bronze tan. I could spend all day at the beach just soaking up the rays and smelling that salty air. Going for a refreshing dip is nice too.

It’s a little too sandy, but I love seeing the water and listening to the waves. I like the salt air at the ocean too, but a lake beach is nice also, especially the Great Lakes.

You will think I’m crazy, but I rarely go even though I can walk to Waikiki. I am the type of person who gets a sunburn within half an hour. When I go, it’s early in the morning, and I only stay about an hour while the sun is low.

I love to go to the park and sit in the shade. I love picnics and cookouts. I occasionally go hiking with a friend on easy trails. My knees are old and can rebel at extended exertion.

JLeslie's avatar

^^I agree about the shade. I burn in less than 30 minutes without protection. I rarely last much more than an hour at the pool or the beach. I usually get bored.

If I’m in an apartment on the beach and can sit on a covered terrace and watch the water, that works well for me.

RayaHope's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake Waikiki!! Oh yeah, that makes sense with your name. I would love to go there! I think I am jealous:)

I live on an isthmus and I’m surrounded by beaches. The closest is a five minute walk from my house. I go every week! I even go in the winter when the lake is frozen over and walk out onto the ice. It’s my happy place. In fact, I’ve never been happier living anywhere else. I’m blessed.

Demosthenes's avatar

Of course. I am Californian, after all. And in the years since college, I’ve gotten into surfing (though by no means very good at it).

Zaku's avatar

Yes, I do love the beach, oceans, coasts . . .

smudges's avatar

TBH, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of or known anyone who doesn’t love, or at least enjoy the beach.

Do you use an spf of at least 15? better yet, 30 by the water.

filmfann's avatar

Depends on the beach.
Some have a lot of positive ions in the air, which make me uncomfortable.

eyesoreu's avatar

Living on the North East coast of England, yeah, kinda no choice.

Kropotkin's avatar

It’s one of the least appealing things I can imagine.

I’ve never understood the idea of lying still to fry yourself in the sun to irreversibly damage and prematurely age one’s skin.

Beaches themselves are often crowded and dirty, and sand is horribly unpleasant stuff.

Nomore_Tantrums's avatar

No where near a beach. Lakes don’t count.

Blackwater_Park's avatar

I generally don’t mind it. It’s ok, but I’m more of a weekend in the mountains alone kind of guy though. I get dragged to the beach every year and the only thing that helps me keep my sanity is that I get up an hour or two before sunrise and fish until people start waking up and getting out. I never get hit on outside of this but there is almost always some lady, usually older hitting on me when I’m out trying to fish and the sun has just come up. I have no idea why, I’m not a very attractive guy. Just average. While flattering, it’s my que to leave because next come the screaming kids. You can set your watch by this, at any beach.
My wife and in laws like to sit; on the beach, for hours. During those times I just try not to go too stir crazy. I’ll get a hall pass from my wife to spend a day or two fishing rather than sit on the beach if I can find an affordable charter (almost never) or hit a nearby pier. I do enjoy that.

smudges's avatar

@Kropotkin & @Blackwater_Park I stand corrected. ;)

jca2's avatar

I like the beach but don’t go very often. Maybe once a year, we’ll get to a beach. When we used to go to Cape Cod every year, it would be a few times within the week or two that we were there, that we’d get to the beach.

I also enjoy just going to the beach in the evening, with clothes on, just to take a walk or look at the ocean.

My goal is never to get a tan. I consider a tan to be sun damage, even though it’s very trendy to be tanned and not very trendy to be white. I have a friend who refers to a tan as “color” as in “I got some good color.” She is covered with spots on her arms and neck and I don’t think of that as nice looking, but whatever.

Another “I don’t like the beach” here – kinda. I didn’t mind it that much when my kids were young. It was their enthusiasm for building sand structures, boogie boarding, and searching for sea life that made the difference. Although, we’re all extremely pale (my daughter is a redhead). The amount of sunblock and ridiculous swimming shirts that we had to try to avoid getting burned was a bit of a bummer.

Anyway, now I don’t have any interest in going to the beach, even though I’m less than an hour from many. I far prefer the woods and hiking. I actually didn’t mind the beach on the west coast when I was out there in the 90s. I lived a block from the ocean (Isla Vista) and would spend a lot of time there. But it was a different experience. It wasn’t about sitting in a crowd of people playing their bluetooth country music and spraying sunblock in your face. There were very few people there, and I could spend time on the beach by myself and actually go to places where I wouldn’t see another human for a long time. The west coast has a lot of beaches like this. New England beaches are largely crowded and depressing.

No.
I do not like sand. It is coarse and rough irritating and it gets everywhere.

Kropotkin's avatar

@smudges Damn right you’re corrected! And SPF 30 is useless. 70+ at least.

janbb's avatar

I live a mile from some of the best beaches on the Jersey shore. I do love going down but usually a couple of hours is plenty. I really enjoy walking the boardwalks even better on a warn summer night or a chilly winter day.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Love beaches !
I used to ride my bike down to Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach, when I was in elementary school .

raum's avatar

Love the beach.
Feels like home.

RayaHope's avatar

For all those that love the beach, I wish we could all have a beach party together and have so much fun. SPF 30 at least but I still love to get tanned because it really highlights my green eyes. Love to sunbathe while watching all the people walk by and sometimes someone will stop and we’ll have a nice little chat. @ragingloli What do you like?

Nomore_Tantrums's avatar

Have to wonder if Eric Bob Zipper and the Rays are still around.

ragingloli's avatar

@RayaHope
I can tell you what I do not like.
I do not like the sun.
Especially not on a beach.
Because the sun of a beach is too hot.

Jons_Blond's avatar

@RayaHope I have green eyes as well! Did you know only two percent of the population has green eyes? We’re rare. :)

RayaHope's avatar

@Jonsblond AND beautiful!! I know I have not met anyone around here with them.
@ragingloli You are a tough nut to crack, I bet you’re just a softy trying to be bad.

Jons_Blond's avatar

I should make a little correction. My eyes have some blue but they are more green than blue. It’s still a rare color and definitely stands out with a bit of a tan.

RayaHope's avatar

@Jonsblond Green with a little blue OMG!! I LOVE that!

jca2's avatar

I’m another one in the Green Eyed Club.

RayaHope's avatar

@jca2 We should start a club. What should we call it? We need a catchy name.

I liked the red heart that was in the OP. :)
I guess you had to remove it because it was technically text speak.
However, I think it should have stayed.
I can see limiting text so that it doesn’t compromise comprehensibility, but given the pre-edit answers to your OP, I’m sure the respondents clearly understood its meaning.
I know I did.

I didn’t love going to beaches in the Los Angeles area, because the traffic was annoying, and dealing with the sand was a nuisance.
There are beaches in less arid areas where you can lie on grass instead. One such place I went to was Second Beach, where Vancouver, Canada meets English Bay.

Another beach I liked going to was one at Lake Tahoe.
My friend and I went there 40 years ago, on Labor Day weekend in 1982.
The day was very warm and we were playing frisbee on the grass.
After awhile I was hot and sweaty, and diving into that emerald green water was one of the most refreshing things I’ve ever done.

When I emerged from my dive, I saw a black Newfie smiling at me.
I think we instantly bonded over our enjoyment of the water.
I splashed Newfie, they playfully lunged at me, and I put my arm around her neck in a pretend headlock.
Newfie shook his head, and I dove backwards onto my back, as if the pooch had mightily disposed of an insignificant pest. ;-p

RayaHope's avatar

@Brian1946 I could give you a BIG KISS XOXO I didn’t want to change the heart but they made me do it.

seawulf575's avatar

I used to like going to the beach. But my wife changed that. It is now a big production…gotta pack coolers, take chairs, pack like you are going for a 3 day vacation. By the time I get there I feel like I’ve put in a full day’s work.

I would probably go if it was just a towel or blanket and some sun tan oil. Maybe a frisbee or a kite. And I only live about 40 minutes from 5 different beaches.

RayaHope's avatar

@seawulf575 All I need is a beach towel and a sunny day. I’ll swing by and pick you up, your wife won’t mind, will she? ;) kidding

sohelaktar123's avatar

Yes. I love going to the beach.
