Should I get a new windshield?

Asked by renaistre (6points) September 20th, 2008

I have a ‘95 Camry that has just over 200k on it. The windshield has never been replaced, and it is pitted badly enough that it always looks dirty. I don’t think it’s dangerous, but it’s starting to get annoying. I’m trying to decide if it is worth getting a new windshield or just wait it out until this car dies and I get a new one. Any thoughts?

I’m pretty sure it is dangerous as it compromises the overall integrity of the glass. I’ve always been told that if your windshield has a pit or crack, you should get it fixed because in the event of an accident it could cost you in terms or damage to your car or to yourself. You COULD wait for your next car but you never know what could happen in the meantime. Better safe than dead.

Asm: Really? I’ve got a pit in my windshield and have never thought much about it.
When you say damage to yourself, do you mean from the windshield?
Or do you mean from what the windshield was meant to protect you from?

How does the pitting affect your vision while driving? Also how long do you intend to keep the car? If safety isn’t an issue, I’d wait. New windsheilds can be pretty expensive.

Is it an option to have it coated with something to smooth out the pits, but avoid the expense of a new windshield on a car with a short remaining half life? You might check this out.

@Nimis: I guess it depends on the accident. lots of ifs in there. I mean, if the glass didn’t splinter as it should because of a pit and a larger than normal piece struck you or if it breaks when it normally wouldn’t have because of the same reason you could potentially wind up worse than you normally would. there are too many variables. personally, id rather err on the side of caution if it keeps my face the same shape it arrived in. im partial to it! :) I just remember that being drilled into my head by my drivers ed class and my mother. then again.. my mom is more likely to worry about things like that for my sake. I mean, shes my mom. :)

p.s. sorry about the atrocious punctuation! my phone is made of fail.

Asm: In that context, I too am partial to my face.
I’m guessing that was a typo, but I’m kind of digging that phrase made of fail.

no typo, you gotta love gamer slang! :) it’s epic win. learn it, love it, live it.
