General Question

Am I the only one considering the response "whatever" or "I don't care" as disrespectful?

Asked by Magnus (2884points) September 20th, 2008 from iPhone

When people respond to me like that it is most probably because they don’t have anything better to say. But I see it as very offensive thing to say, like I don’t deserve a better answer or that you don’t care about what I’m saying.
Spare answering “whatever” or “I don’t care in this thread, would be funny, but spare it.

Eh, whatever.

A little bit disrespectful, but extremely annoying.

Depends on the question and your relationship to the respondent.

I have a 17 year old son and I appreciate any response, even whatever, so long as it is said without a sneer or a snarl.

You learn to appreciate the little things in life as you age a bit.

True SRM ~ but I am going to say it is rude and disrespectful. I can sometimes take
“I don’t care” but I absolutely cannot stand being answered with the word “WHATEVER”!

It all depends on the tone or the question, in my opinion. If someone asks something like where/what would I like to eat, I usually respond with a I don’t care or whatever because I will eat almost anything. Now if I’m having an issue with a person or something this person is affiliated with and the response is one of the two mentioned, then I get a little upset.

I concur with Randy. But when I am trying to get one of my clients to do something, and they just give me excuse after excuse, I say “whatever”, because they have worn me down, and I do not care anymore.

Everything in context.
And everything with a grain of salt.

Yes! You either CARE about something, or you DON’T.

I Believe “James Caan” believes the same thing.

Are YOU James Caan?

Yeah, depends on the context and the tone, definitely. When I get flustered or frustrated I’ll always just be like, “Oh whatever!” or when someone asks me what I want to do or where I want to eat I’ll just say I don’t care. Not because I’m rude, but because I am quite open-minded and it really doesn’t matter to me, I just go with the flow.

I forgot to add, just last night I sent a boy (who I like) a text message, saying something about how whenever he sees me I look like a hobo, and he replied with just “Whatever”
I was pretty insulted, and bothered because I couldn’t tell whether it was a lighthearted-you’re-being-silly whatever, or if it was a just-leave-me-alone whatever. So I just left it at that…. that’ll teach him.. hmph

I do not like either answer. I feel offended when I get that answer-of course when my teenager says it I don’t mind nearly as much as if she would have said ‘I hate you” which is what I usually get.
