Why the little drink in the big glass?

Asked by Jeruba (55829points) December 10th, 2022

What is the point and purpose of serving alcoholic beverages such as scotch in a wide, heavy-based tumbler when the amount of liquid is so small? Why not use a small glass?

I pretty much stick to wine, seldom have a mixed drink and never order straight liquor, so I don’t get this practice. Is it anything other than a quirky custom?

I can’t say for sure, but I think it has to do with giving the liquor room to be swirled so that air touches all of it. I do know that people swirl brandy and cognac and then smell it before taking a sip, which they then also swirl in their mouths. That’s about the extent of my liquor / liqueur knowledge.

After a couple of the tiny drinks, it give a tipsy customer the opportunity to order a double.

I just drank wine out of a coffee cup. I guess I don’t get it either.
(BTW, I’m not a total cretin, the wine glasses were in the dishwasher, and the other glasses didn’t have cute pictures on them like the coffee mug.)
