What type of phone mount for a car would you recommend?

Asked by Jeruba (55824points) December 13th, 2022

Dashboard, windshield, or air-vent mounting? Any particular brand? And is the $45 one really twice as good as the $24 one?

I prefer an air vent mount, mostly because I do not like things on my dashboard or on the windshield. I like an uncluttered view. I had one that had a round magnet with stickum on the back that mounted on the back of the phone, and the air vent mount was small and had a magnet in it it.

(The new car I bought in 2021 has apple pay built in and I just use the built in screen. the phone is plugged in and resting in the center console.)

I have the same kind of mount that @zenvelo had. A magnet attaches to the air vent and a flat disc is attached to the phone with a special tape. I actually inserted the disc between my phone and the case so it is not visible. If I recall, I bought it for $5 from a bargain bin somewhere. It has “Youse” printed on the front. That makes me smile every time I see it. I can hear some Mafioso saying “Youse guys!”

I have the same as above. I’ve had it for years through at least two different phones. Someone gave it to me, but I think they got it from Amazon.

I know popsocket has some and I LOVE my pop for holding my phone in my hands, especially when taking photos or video, but I don’t have experience with their car mount. Here’s the link. You would need to get a pop and the mount. https://www.popsockets.com/en-us/more/mounts?prefn1=refinementProductType&prefv1=PopMount%20Car%20Vent%7CPopMount%20Car%20Dash%20%26%20Windshield&srule=best-sellers&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CjwKCAiAheacBhB8EiwAItVO2wHwach-m8sx6fHA-qsUDV-BLOp6VPKP7qkN59wvoJDMPnjGtQjSGxoC9XsQAvD_BwE&utm_campaignid=16098358272&utm_adgroupid=138184386953&utm_adid=598471667714&utm_keyword=popsocket%20car%20mount&utm_matchtype=e&utm_campaign=PPS_g_USA_acq_search_Brand&utm_adgroup=M_Mounts&gclid=CjwKCAiAheacBhB8EiwAItVO2wHwach-m8sx6fHA-qsUDV-BLOp6VPKP7qkN59wvoJDMPnjGtQjSGxoC9XsQAvD_BwE

There are removable pops that hold around the sides of your phone if you don’t want to stick the pop on your phone case.

@Forever_Free Some people use their phone as GPS and don’t have a car that shows their phone map on the car screen.

I use a popsocket mount. Cheap and effective.

Good grief. You just never know when you’re going to hit a hot button.

My son uses his phone to supply audio directions when he’s driving. He holds the phone with one hand and drives with one hand. This is frightening to me. If I give him a phone mount for Christmas, maybe he will drive with two hands.

Thank you to all who answered my question. I didn’t need any safety lectures, though, thanks.

When I had my car, I liked using a mount by iOttie similar to this one:
https://www.target.com/p/iottie-easy-one-touch-5-dash-38-windshield-mount-black/-/A-81913914
I didn’t like the air vent mounts that blocked the heat and I’ve used some others that weren’t too strong, especially when I decided to mount them to the windshield instead of the dashboard.
Sorry about all these safety lectures from people… using a mount always made it easier to drive when using maps and if it’s near the middle of your view rather than off to the side, you can keep your eyes on the road easier.
Good luck!

I was forced by the design of my dash to mount on a curved surface which is not ideal. Use the alcohol prep wipe in the package or clean dash with isopropyl alcohol before mounting. It has lasted a year now.

Another consideration. It worked best to put the magnet in the center of my phone case. But now if I want to use my magnetic charger in the house I have to take the case off.
