Deprends on your eyesight and your comfort level. I never wanted to try contacts because I hate touching my eyes.

I’ve been wearing contacts since I was 18 so many decades lol. I really appreciate contacts in the summer, when it’s hot and humid and having glasses on my face just makes me feel hot. I also think I see better with contacts, since the lens is right on your eye, whereas with glasses, the lens is not as close toyour eye.

That said, contacts need to be replaced more frequently, are sensitive to dusty or smokey environments and you need a clean place and clean hands to put the contacts in.

If you work in a dusty environment, like maybe a construction worker, contacts would not be best for you. Eyeglasses can serve as safety glasses for construction or craft jobs.

I find if I’m tired, like if I’m out late, contacts make my eyes irritated. If I wear my contacts out, I will bring eyeglasses with me so I can take the lenses out and put the glasses on. The lenses are cheap enough that if I need to just take them out and throw them away, it’s not a big deal. When I was younger, contacts were a whole lot more expensive so I would never have done that.

My point is that it really depends on the wearer and what their needs are. If someone is shaky or afraid of touching their eyes, that would be an issue although you become unafraid after a few tries.

I get my contacts and glasses from Costco, so they’re cheaper than elsewhere but if cost is a factor, contacts can add up as they need to be replaced on a regular basis.

I remember when I was 18, I wore eyeglasses and braces, and I got the braces off one day and I got contacts the next day, and all of a sudden boys were talking to me who had not been talking to me previously. That was kind of like a miracle.

I would pick eyeglasses over contacts.

Just FYI, you can have both eyeglasses and contacts, and wear the contacts on some days and the glasses on others, or wear either one for certain occasions. That’s what I do now. I used to wear contacts exclusively every time I left the house, now I mix it up. I wear glasses exclusively in the house – when I get home, one of the first things I do is take out my contacts, kind of like changing into comfortable clothes.

I have prescription sunglasses because it’s very important for your eyes to protect them from the sun, but it does take some planning to have both the prescription sunglasses and the regular eyeglasses when I’m out, or you can get the transition lenses where they’re darker in the sun and lighter indoors, but they’re pretty expensive for those lenses. I have them, but not all of my eyeglasses have that, so I have to keep that in mind when I’m going out, to take the right glasses.

I have worn glasses for 55 years. I wore contacts for about a year. I hated it. It made night driving horrible.

Everyone gets to decide for themselves, so you’ll know for sure after you try contacts. Good luck.

I can understand why people with very poor eyesight prefer to wear contacts, but I doubt I could do it with how dry my eyes tend to get since my thyroid went haywire. Even without the thyroid thing, I wouldn’t be inclined to wear contacts, but I haven’t really been in the shoes of someone who needs to wear glasses, and especially I wasn’t very young when my sight wasn’t 20/20.

I only wear glasses at home usually, and primarily for reading, but not being able to see 5 or 10 feet without glasses would suck, and with contacts it’s like having good sight, especially if you can sleep with them. I can understand why people prefer contacts for multiple reasons.

You can just alternate and wear contacts when you feel like it, and glasses when you feel like it. Pretty much everyone I know who wears contacts also has a pair of glasses just in case, even if it’s an old script.

I have both but prefer contacts for the peripheral vision and activities.
I’ve had them since 8th grade and can touch my eyes anywhere for as long as I want. Its my party trick!

jca2's avatar

@KNOWITALL Yeah, you get used to it. I don’t use a mirror to put my contacts in, I just do it.

@jca2 Glasses annoyed my sinuses, plus I had braces so I didn’t want both ha!

I want to get cat eye’s for fin this fall, they aren’t cheap. :)

@KNOWITALL For me, glasses fog up in hot weather when I go into AC, or in the winter when I go into the heat, plus in the summer they’re just so hot on the face.

I wore both glasses and contacts on and off until I had lasik done 15 years ago. I had both soft and gas permeable contacts. The soft contacts were the best. You could leave them in for days but I always took them out at night. I don’t regret lasik at all.

For me, glasses. I tried contacts early on, but I hated sticking my fingers near my eyes. So I have had glasses (now bifocals) for 45 years. Not the same pair, of course.

I’ve worn both. Contacts are a bother. Need to keep everything clean. If dust gets in your eye, it often makes its way under the lens (oww!) But you can to wear the coolest sunglasses without paying an arm and a leg. They in place during athletic activities.

Glasses are lower maintenance – just wipe and go. They double as semi-effective safety glasses against particles that are randomly floating around. Obviously you want real safety glasses when there is a predictable hazard. Glasses bounce around during athletic activities. Prescription sunglasses cost a lot!

Which is better depends on what you are doing.
