Broken an eardrum?

Asked by DrasticDreamer (23996points) September 24th, 2008

Have you ever broken an eardrum? If so, did it heal on its own or did you have surgery? I just found out that my eardrum has been broken for two months, at least, and isn’t healing. I have to see a specialist on the 1st, but I’m really paranoid that I’ll have to have surgery or that I won’t regain the hearing that I’ve lost. :( Positive stories would be good, just so I stop worrying.

I got a slight tear in mine while learning how to scuba dive. The pain was excruciating! but other than some slight hearing loss, I’m fine now. I had no surgery. The doctor said I lost about 4% of my hearing. I hope all goes well for you.

My 10-year-old had his eardrum punctured. It healed all on its own and he’s fine now.

My eardrum ruptured from an ear infection. It healed up on its own but I lost some hearing.

I did once. I had a build up of fluid just bust right through in my sleep. Hurt like hell!!! I got some eardrops from my Dr. and it healed up but my sense of sound balance has been off ever since.

Hello. I’m an Audiologist.

If it’s really been 2 or more months since the rupture, it very likely will not heal on its own. If you have hearing loss, then surgery to patch it may restore it to some degree, but there are no guarantees. The Ear Dr. should be able to give you an idea of your chances for improvement following a thorough evaluation. Should that not work for you, a hearing aid can help give you the amplification of sound that the eardrum and middle ear are no longer providing.

Keep the ear as dry as you can… use swim plugs when bathing. It is quite common for water to get through the perforation and to brew an infection which leads to drainage from the ear.

Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

I had a perforated ear drum about 25 years ago. At that time it did not heal. So had to have surgery. They patched it up and removed a small cyst apparently in there, I lost a wee bit of hearing, but all went well other wise. They fixed it and I was discharged the next day. I occasionally get an ear infection in the same ear.
