Do you have a personal quote for your life?

Asked by elchoopanebre (3079points) September 26th, 2008

Either one that you came up with or one that is important/symbolic to you?

The one that I keep telling myself is, “If you’re not doing whatever you’re doing with your whole being, you’re probably wasting your time.”

Another one I like is a Pete Seeger quote:
“Any damn fool can get complicated but it takes a wise man to be simple.”

Loads!...depending on where I am and what I’m doing, various quotes, phrases and sayings tend to pop in to my head. Last couple of weeks, this one keeps coming up:

“If things seem under control, you’re just not going fast enough.”
Mario Andretti

One that comes to me frequently is: “Wherever you go, there you are.”

Mine is a little modification on the song “On Your Porch” by The Format,

“And these last few years, I know they’ve been hard, but now it’s time to get out of the desert and into the sun, even if it’s alone.”

I am so smart,
I am so smart,

I mean, S – M – A – R – T,
I am so smart.

this is the one i tell people when we mention our achievements – “Everyday I break the record for # of days I have lived.”

I have one in particular that has stuck with me for years. I love it, because it’s simple, true and puts everything into perspective: “Life: It’s sexually transmitted and always fatal.”

Mine is from a song:

I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God’s got a sick sense of humor
And when I die, I expect to find him laughing

I have dozens of favorites, but these two are a good pair to live your life by:

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” ~Walt Disney

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.” ~W.C. Fields

JackAdams's avatar

Your post reminded me of another quote, regarding a rumor that has persisted to this day, of what is on the tombstone of W. C. Fields:

It is incorrectly claimed that his epitaph reads, “On the whole, I’d rather be in Philadelphia.”

It is true that that was what he told friends he wanted on it, but here’s a photo of his actual marker;.

This great stuff!! A couple of mine:

Work as if no prayer will help, and pray as if no work will help.

What doesn’t kill you will make you stonger.

And my favorite from Woody Allen: “Sincerity is everything. Once you can fake that, you’ve got it made!”

I found this one online a couple of years ago and adopted it:

Don’t piss off the alligator until after you’ve crossed the river.

“I’m not apathetic, I just don’t care.” – Eel

“Believa-A and you shall Receive-A!” – Billy (from Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy)
“Hakuna Matata” – Lion King

“I define my experiences not by what I do, but who I’m with when I’m doing it.” – Pneumonic

The following are all from Groucho Marx:
“A man’s only as old as the woman he feels.”
“A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke.”
“All people are born alike – except Republicans and Democrats.”
“Before I speak, I have something important to say.”
“I read in the newspapers they are going to have 30 minutes of intellectual stuff on television every Monday from 7:30 to 8. to educate America. They couldn’t educate America if they started at 6:30.”
“One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I’ll never know.”
“Well, art is art, isn’t it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh… now you tell me what you know.”
“Ice water? Eat an onion, that’ll make your eyes water!”
“Oh, are you from Wales? Do you know a fella named Jonah? He used to live in whales for a while.”
“Will you marry me? Did he leave you any money? Answer the second question first.”
“Q: What do you get when you cross an insomniac, an agnostic, and a dyslexic?
A: Someone who stays up all night wondering if there is a Dog.”

and finally:

“I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.”

I kinda dig the Marx Brothers… It’s my thing. Tried to find a Harpo quote from one of their movies, but… you get the joke right?

I have to remind myself of this one far too often:
“Self-pity is a death that has no resurrection, a sinkhole from which no rescuing hand can drag you because you have chosen to sink.” -Elizabeth Elliot

When I was in Toastmasters, I remembered a quote from the late Pat Buttram who, many are surprised to learn, was a very much in-demand after-dinner speaker, whose “dance card” was always full.

Before every engagement where he was expected to approach the dais and entertain the audience, he would softly mumble this prayer (probably in his Mr Haney voice):

“Lord, fill my mouth with interesting stuff, and nudge me when I’ve said enough.”

Nimis's avatar

JackA: You were in Toastmasters?
Dare I even ask what your speeches were about?

JackAdams's avatar

You can ask…

Just don’t expect an answer…

elanakin's avatar

“You are the cause and effect of everything that happens in your life.” and “You can only be as happy as you were once sad.”
