Another reason to please make sure at least one other Jelly has your contact info:

My daughter went on a hike 3 days ago and that mountain is now burnt to a crisp.

Jeruba's avatar

@Caravanfan, is your daughter ok?

Caravanfan's avatar

@Jeruba Oh, she’s fine. Just dealing with power outages. She lives deep in the suburbs next to Santa Monica so the fire would have to jump a lot to get to her.

janbb's avatar

@Caravanfan @Jeruba How’s the air quality around the Bay Area? Has it been affected?

Jeruba's avatar

Nice clear blue Northern California day today, temp. ~70, following several raw, chilly, rainy and windy days. No orange skies showing here yet.

@Caravanfan, thank goodness. That was a worrisome cliffhanger. You could have been waiting for news.

Caravanfan's avatar

@Jeruba Oh, sorry. No, she’s fine. her cat is freaked out though

janbb's avatar

I’m hoping Brian and tinyfaery will chime in. RocketMan too, I believe?

Caravanfan's avatar

@janbb Rocketman is nowhere near the fires. He lives in the SF Bay Area.

janbb's avatar

@Caravanfan Good to know.

Caravanfan's avatar

@janbb Palisades Fire is getting closer to my daughter. She is not under evacuation order yet but school is closed. She has her go-bag packed.

chyna's avatar

Sorry to hear that @Caravanfan.
You must be very worried.

Caravanfan's avatar

@chyna Honestly not yet. My daughter is smarter than I am and knows what she needs to do. There is a plan.

I live a bit south of @Jeruba and @Caravanfan . Clear blue sky, 70F.

I live in the suburban flatlands, and I’m about 9 air miles from the Palisades fire.
I was concerned, so I prepared a pet carrier for my cat.

I prepared an evac bag in December, 2017, when there was a potential wildfire about 3 miles from me. I didn’t have to evacuate then, but the bag is still ready to go.

When I saw that the winds were blowing the fires away from me, I relaxed a little.

Then our area lost power for about 24 hours.
Apparently our Dept. of Water and Power is still using aerial lines for regional distribution, because if those lines were buried, then I think “only” earthquakes, and not wind, would be a factor.

I think tinyfaery lives farther away from the Palisades fire than I do, but there was an unrelated structure fire that spread to about 3 other houses in an area that may close to her residence.
From what I’ve heard, that fire is out, so I think she’s okay for now.

I have a number of friends and family who live in L.A., including my sister and her family who live in Venice Beach, and one friend who lives in Santa Monica, so right near the Palisades Fire. He is under an evacuation warning, but not an order. Already heard of a friend of a friend who lost their house in Pacific Palisades.

Aaaand my daughter just got an evac warning. So it will be an interesting evening

Caravanfan's avatar

aaand and another text saying that was a false alarm.

raum's avatar

Appreciate this post. Glad to read the updates. Stay safe, guys.

Jeruba's avatar

@Caravanfan, in what form did the warning come?

Caravanfan's avatar

Text message.

Caravanfan's avatar

Fire is getting closer to my daughter. She is now two blocks from the evacuation warning zone. One of her friends has been evacuated. She didn’t get much sleep last night.

janbb's avatar

@Caravanfan Hugs to you and her.

And now LA is under curfew. Winds shifted.

Caravanfan's avatar

Winds now blowing east. Daughter is a little less than 3 miles southeast from the fire. That doesn’t seem like a lot but there is a lot of urban between the fire and her. So she should still be ok.

@Caravanfan

I agree- the exteriors of most urban and suburban structures are fire resistant to the extent that their exteriors are made of stucco, concrete, stone, or brick, etc. which won’t catch fire from a floating ember or a inflamed flying twig.

Also, there is no shortage of pavement here in the SF valley!

I am safe. I’m in Orange County, so a bit further south. A couple of my friends in LA drove to Palm Springs, about 100 miles Southeast of LA. They were in the Hollywood area, near the “Sunset” fire.

My best friend left with her 3 cats, under an evacuation warning, and headed east to her father’s house in Pomona. Her electricity was off for 3 days. She came back on Saturday to remove spoiled food from her refrigerator. The power came back on around 4 am in the morning. She lives near the Altadena fire. She said she saw 5 water dropping helicopters flying overhead as she was driving back. Those helicopters and planes are impressive.

I have quite a few friends and relatives spread all over LA. Thankfully, they are all accounted for, and at this time their homes are still intact. My best friend was the closest to the fire, the one in Altadena. One of my friends from the Hollywood area, he and his wife tried to evacuate with their cat, as they could see huge flames from their street, although they are down in the flat part, not the hills. He said they ended up having to go back home because the traffic was so bad on the surface streets. They couldn’t get to the freeway.

One of my aunts is near the Kenneth fire in the valley. I’m not sure how far away from it she is, but she’s OK too.

Another friend and their family live near the Hurst fire but they are OK too. The big worry is that tomorrow (Tuesday 1/14) and Wed 1/15 are supposed to bring more high winds, so that is very worrying.

Caravanfan's avatar

@Brian1946 She’s in Sawtelle by Santa Monica which is quite close to the lower part of the red flag zone of the Palasades Fire. But the lines haven’t moved in a few days so she’s probably okay.

janbb's avatar

@Caravanfan has she not considered coming “home”?

Caravanfan's avatar

@janbb She’s in school.

janbb's avatar

^^ Hugs to you both.

A dear friend of mine has a son, his wife and their one month old baby in LA. They’ve evacuated to Ojai for now.

Such scary times.
