Maybe it’s my age. But when bad things have happened that I had to deal with, I have found comfort in long symphonies. Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Bach, and others. The keys are:

1) no words to distract me
2) long instrumentals – sometimes 15–20 minutes per movement.
3) almost all symphonies have different movements (sections) with different moods – starting often with something pleasant, then going to a minor or sadder key, then moving to something more optimistic, and a final grander movement with a powerful ending.

But you’re 45 years younger than me, and your taste will be different.

I couldn’t listen to music for some months after my Ex left but then I found comfort in some women singer-songwriters on Pandora like Priscilla Herdman, Claudia Schmidt, and Kate Wolff. The folk genre in general has always been my basic go-to.

The Curse

We’ve heard the tale since we were young,
Heard the songs that have been sung,
About an evil spell.

Someone beautiful is cursed
We feel sad through every verse
Til a kiss and all is well

The message that no one can see
Is clearer to someone like me

There is no curse or evil spell
That’s worse than one we give ourselves
There is no sorceror as cruel,
As the proud, angry fool.

And yet, we cry life isn’t fair
Beneath our cries the truth is there

The power that will break the spell
We should know very well
Is locked within ourselves

Yet we’d rather blame,
And curse our fate than change
We run from everyone to hide from the pain
And all the shame

The story’s old we know it well
About a wretched evil spell
The power that will break this curse
Oh I know all too well
Is locked within myself

Bob Dylan’s “Shelter From the Storm.” The song’s a reminder of how difficult and challenging life can be, the need to nurture supportive love, and the sadness of not knowing what one has had until it’s gone.

My fellow Jellies, have you watched “A Complete Unknown?” If not, I have just 3 words for you: See the movie. It really is that good. The film opened on Christmas, so Paul and I went to an early showing. What a great Christmas!

We had an outage at the power plant that was so long and bad that we adopted Whipping Post by the Allman Brothers. It isn’t a feel good song but it was so fitting it made me smile when I heard it.
