Canada is breaking up officially with the US. What do you think of the recent Trade War that has started between the US and Canada?

Asked by Forever_Free (9302points) 2 weeks ago

What are your thoughts on Canada’s reaction today to the US.
One of the most amicable relationship between nations has escalated with a tariff war.

Trump is 1000% to blame for this, the idiot keeps thinking a trade deficit is a subsidy ,if Canada had violated the free trade agreement the orange turd would be screaming it from the rooftops, I am super glad our country has decided to join the EU to deversify our trading options, starting with our oil an LNG, we will survive without the US, and we will NOT become the 51st state.

ragingloli's avatar

The only appropriate response. Canada has also cancelled a 100 million starlink contract today.
And of course Agent Krasnov responded with threats of more tariffs in response.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

I think Trump will push for Russian Wheat and Vodka . . . and stop trading with Canada, Mexico and China.

I am as serious as a heart attack.

ragingloli's avatar

@Tropical_Willie
That would certainly enable him to financially support the Russian war effort. Which is most probably the reason for it.

Caravanfan's avatar

It’s just all tragic and unnecessary.

janbb's avatar

Just awful and pointless and going to bite all Americans who aren’t billionaire oligarchs in the ass.

cookieman's avatar

Sad and likely a sign of worse things to come.

KNOWITALL's avatar

I think its very sad that Canadians pay such high prices for US goods and I hope they find affordable alternatives.
Its not the first trade war and wont be the last, but I am honestly more worried for them than us. Experts say this will throw them into recession. Sad.

janbb's avatar

@KNOWITALL It will probably throw us into recession too!

gorillapaws's avatar

@KNOWITALL Most of our oil comes from Canada. Increases in domestic production won’t change the situation because we aren’t able to refine the oil we produce.

@ragingloli They are even proposing 100 percent tariff on Teslas. That made me smile.
Canada also has a lot of rare earth metals that they are looking to trade with China and cut us off.

Pandora's avatar

@Forever_Free We will head straight into recession as the welfare billionaires Musk and Trump steal what is left for themselves and their billionaire friends. They thought Covid was bad for the economy. Wait till they see what tarriffs this high will do as other nations cut us off.

Lightlyseared's avatar

Not only was Canada a major source of oil for the US, they were selling it to the US at a discount. I suspect now the US has reneged on that trade deal Canada may not continue to honor that.

JLeslie's avatar

I think housing prices in the US will go way up.

I think tariffs with Canada are a huge mistake. My feeling is there shouldn’t be any tariffs in either direction between Canada and the US.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

It has pushed more leaders to be assertive in all aspects of running a country. Like paying off debt, and border crossings, debt and eliminating intra country trade barriers.

It’s also increasing interest in politics.

janbb's avatar

^^ And I expect Trudeau is much more popular right now than he has been for a while.

KNOWITALL's avatar

I heard Alberta is coming to ask for a deal, they think Trydeau is posturing while people suffer the high prices.

ragingloli's avatar

@KNOWITALL
Do you seriously not realise that you are the villain in this conflict?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@KNOWITALL I am hoping that there will be an auto/parts/car exemption. Both sides would be devastated without one.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ragingloli Thats rich from a German.
@RedDeerGuy1 Trump said last night hes giving tax breaks to Americans buying cars made in the US.
I do hope they can compromise for the good of both our countries.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@KNOWITALL Ok. How many cars are made 100% in America? The tax break will cancel out the tariffs. As the importer pays. So no problem.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@KNOWITALL There are NO automobile that are 1005 USA content – - – NONE !

Highest USA automobile content is Co-President Musk’s Tesla Model Y at about 75%.

Tax break equals “No Soup for YOU!”

KNOWITALL's avatar

He said he spoke to the top 3 automakers Tuesday so I dont have details, of course.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Once again @KNOWITALL Trump sez . . . and it is ie lie lie LIE LIE !

He was going reduce food prices – - tariffs will drive them up by maybe 20% by summer time.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Sure Biden had nothing to do with this shitty economy. Smh.

janbb's avatar

@KNOWITALL We now know where you get your “news”. The US economy recovered the fastest in the world from the pandemic. Inflation was not over but going down. How do the gay and trans friends you’ve always said you have feel about Trump’s anti-trans and anti-gay agenda, not to mention anti-woman and anti-Blacks?

tinyfaery's avatar

@janbb Her LGBT friends don’t care if she votes against their best interest, dontcha know?

jca2's avatar

@KNOWITALL The reprieve is for one month:

Cut and pasted from the NY Times: The Trump administration said on Wednesday that it would allow carmakers to escape the tariffs imposed on all goods from Canada and Mexico for one month. The announcement came a day after President Trump imposed blanket 25 percent tariffs on all products entering the United States from those countries. The reprieve came after the president spoke with top officials at General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis.

jca2's avatar

@KNOWITALL Re: “Sure Biden had nothing to do with this shitty economy. Smh.” OK, but Trump did say he would lower grocery prices on day 1 but now, not only are grocery prices not being lowered, they’re being raised.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@janbb I don’t discuss politics with any liberals right now, even friends/family, because they are a bit unhinged since last November.
I’ve mentioned multiple times that the BBC and PBS are my main news sources on a regular basis. Not sure what you’re snidely trying to imply but bring receipts.

@jca2 They seem pretty consistent here. What are you seeing increased prices for specifically?
@tinyfaery They certainly haven’t tried to convince of to take a different position.

jca2's avatar

@KNOWITALL I haven’t seen anything go up yet but I haven’t been to a supermarket (other than Costco) in a few weeks. I just saw on the news today that Target, Walmart and other stores are saying prices will go up on multiple categories of items, and they (the news) said that a lot of our produce comes from Mexico, so those things are going to be going up within days.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@jca2 Interesting. I don’t shop those stores but hopefully those that do can find reasonable alternatives.
I did read Canada, Germany and other countries have higher prices as well, sadly.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Don’t talk to liberals . . . but talk to the people you know that are a paycheck away from disaster. or on Social Security and Medicaid.

Co-President Musk and Trump want to stop paying out for the good of low income families.

I think you believe Trump is the best thing that happened since Jesus Christ . . your thinking will kill people this next year.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Caravanfan More will die and Trump and Co-President will be happy ! !

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Seniors are pretty pleased they wont be taxed, waitresses and blue collar workers are excited about no taxes on tips or OT. The only people griping are the ones whos taxes were taken to pay back extended unemployment dyring Covid, and some food stamp recipients being required to get a job to keep benefits.

@Caravanfan I tend to agree on the vaccination issue, one controversial vaccine doesnt mean they are all worthless, as some Reps are saying.

Caravanfan's avatar

@KNOWITALL Which vaccine is controversial?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Caravanfan The Covid shots. That issue bleeding over onto other vaccines is scary. Of course when trust in government decreases, its a natural progression, but still very concerning.

Caravanfan's avatar

@KNOWITALL What is controversial about Covid shots? (Hint: It’s only controversial to people who do not understand the science)

chyna's avatar

@jca2 Did they address a hold on tariffs on China? That’s where most car parts are made, including supposedly “American made” cars.

jca2's avatar

@chyna I just looked at the NY Times again. It doesn’t mention any reprieve for Mexico or China, only the month for the automakers.

chyna's avatar

Thanks.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Caravanfan Myocarditis, blood clots, and long term affects for some. We have a jelly that has discussed it. RFK Jr is working on holding vaccine makers accountable if people have repercussions.

From politico————-
Leaving people injured by Covid vaccines in the pandemic program under those circumstances is a “disservice to public health,” said Renée Gentry, director of George Washington University’s Vaccine Injury Litigation Clinic. “They are becoming vaccine-hesitant.”

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@KNOWITALL – - ONE and QUARTER MILLION DEAD in USA from COVID19 . . ”Myocarditis, blood clots, and long term affects for some” maybe a couple of thousand cases. https://www.vcuhealth.org/pauley-heart-center/the-beat/latest-updates/covid-19-vaccine-and-heart-patients-myocarditis-and-pericarditis/. Most cases are resolved !

I can tell you don’t like science . . or math ! But LOVE conspiracy theories pushed by the MAGA and fright-wingers

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Tropical_Willie
Those people negatively affected matter. If they are able to make a legal claim, perhaps their lives will be easier.

I actually am not a conspiracy theorist but I do hear a lot.
Think as you please, it makes zero difference in my life, respectfully.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

DEAD is DEAD those affected (a fraction of those dead ) means – - -you support RFK Jr and the conspiracy theory, not science and medicine.

Pray for the dead the nest four years, you will make sure there are lots and lots of dead people. (You missed most people affected by vaccine side effects survive, therefore they are not DEAD !)

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Tropical_Willie I thought we may make it thru a conversation without your wacky rants, but I was wrong. Have a great day.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Dead is DEAD !

Most of your conspiracy theory negative side-effects from vaccination never caused a death or long term problems !

I know you hate SCIENCE and MATH!

Here is some math, I’ll bet your (Jesus again Trump) or his dad paid for more abortions than you have fingers and toes – he whored a lot and may still !

JLeslie's avatar

@KNOWITALL Is it all tips, or just tips for people who qualify to be paid the tip wage? I ask because if it is any tip, it could be $50,000 tip to a lawyer or anyone.
