Are there any situations in politics where an uncompromising position is appropriate?

They speak about the art of compromise, and for that reasons, they liken most legislation to sausage. However, there some issues, in my opinion, where compromise destroys any good. For example, you can’t have partial single-payer health insurance. It’s either single-payer, or it isn’t. If it isn’t, then it continues to be an overly expensive to pay for health care, the the health care delivery system is completley unmanageable.

Do you agree that some issues, such as this one, just can’t be compromised on? It’s all, or nothing? Are there other issues where you see this problem?

I am interested in policy solutions regardless of ideology.
