Has anyone had impetigo? Or had a child with it?

Asked by tscoyk (187points) October 1st, 2008

We’ve got impetigo in our house, and I think it’s spreading. Eek. What did you do to treat? Any home remedies to go along with my prescription for anitbiotics? If there was a child involved, how long did the child miss school/daycare?

I remember my sister having it when we were children. I don’t know much about it except that it is verycontagious and she had to go to doctor a lot. Hopefully someonecwith more knowledge than I can help you out here.

I did.
It is horrible. We went to the doctor because it spread from my nose to eyes. Not good. He prescribed a topical salve (Bactroban). It worked very well. Other than that, nothing much helped other than making sure you clean the area, and keep it dry during the day.
Hope everyone gets better soon. Impetaigo is no fun.

Edit: I was young when this happened, maybe 7 or 8. I think I missed about 2 or 3 days of school. Not very long.

I had it on my nose when I was a baby. It was so bad they gave me an oral and topical perscription. I have a small scar to this day… but I don’t think there is really anything you can do besides what the doctor gives you. It’s highly contagious that’s all I know. Good luck. :(

I had if from swimming in a not so clean pool with a mosquito bite (open sore) on my shoulder when I was 13. I was pretty miserable, and it took a few weeks to get over it completely. I wish I had some suggestions for you, but all I can do is wish you the best of luck getting rid of it.

Bactroban worked miracles for us and there were no lasting effects on my son’s skin. He had a small but growing sore and the BB cleared it up very quickly.

Impetigo, caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Group A stretococcus is an extremely common skin infection, and as others have noted, is very contagious. In addition to the topical and oral antibiotics, it is very important to wash the area with soap and water, and to wash all of the child’s clothes and linens with warm/hot water. Segregate the clothing so as to not transmit it from one individual to the next.

Ishy ishy ishy. This is awful. There was blood…honest to God, blood. Oozign and crusting. Oh my stars. Ok, we’re on the antibiotics, we’re doing the bacitracin. Thanks, shilolo for the bedding tip. I’m bleaching linens straightaway.

Thanks to all, your advice is much appreciated. My poor little babies.
