How do you feel about repeat questions?

Asked by Snoopy (5798points) October 8th, 2008

Is it really that big of a deal? Perhaps a person would answer a question differently today than “x” period of time ago. What do you think?

I think it is okay. I’m not sure why it bothers people so..if I don’t like a question for whatever reason, mostly I will skip it. I agree that one might answer different at a different time also.

It is 10/8/08 BTW….at least in the USA as per your profile

I don’t mind repeat questions. But I think repeat answers are kind of retarded.

@starburst hope you didn’t sign and date any major life altering contracts today

@Nimis as in “me too” answers in the same thread, or someone answering the repeat question the same way….?

Snoopy's avatar

@starburst. Hey! Now my posts are going to look really stupid. :)

Snoopy's avatar

@Nimis. great. You edited your response and now I look like a complete idiot.

Are you two in cahoots?

Nimis's avatar

Haha…that shit happens to me all the time too.
There should be a reply to button that freezes (or bookmarks) the original answer.
I’ve re-reedited it. You likes?

Oh, Scamp. How do I love thee.

Starburst's avatar

actually, that is kinda funny…...I think it is very boring that this forum is not set up to display the date and time. I also think it is hilarious that someone would care to correct someone else’s mistake on the date…it made me rothl….thanks for the chuckle, snoopy!!!! ;)

@starburst: Well take care! If you had spelled something incorrectly, I wouldn’t have pointed that out….

I have standards.

What did Snoopy originally ask?

Nimis's avatar

But, seriously? I don’t mind repeat questions.
As you’ve already pointed out, people’s answers may change.

Also, if you’re looking for a black and white answer, you may have incentive to find an old question. But if you’re looking to partake in a discussion, there seems to be little incentive to muck your way around the search engine. Chances are, the only person following that old thread is the original querer.

Perhaps a Questions With Recent Activity option
would provide more incentive to continue old threads?

I don’t mind repeat questions if they are not within a few hours or days of the same question. That seems like a waste. I do think the questioner should check to see how many times or when that question might have been asked.

Snoopy's avatar

@ jack THIS isn’t a repeat question. At least not by me.

This question is in reference to my having seen people curtly point out to people that their question is a repeat.

On another thread I was just on, someone apologized for a repeat. See Nimis’ link above (which prompted this Q)

I link repeats not out of curtness or annoyance but to share info. Personally I get tired of answering something that I have already responded to; but I understand that there are always newcomers here. The earlier answers are often interesting and informative.

For me, it depends on the question. Some questions may seem like repeats, but small differences in the details actually make the discussion different, and poll questions are okay because new people have joined, and things turn out differently.

On the other hand, if it’s just a factual question, I would appreciate for people to do a quick google search or anything and try to figure it out for themselves.

Honestly fluther’s seach tool sucks. It just does, so I’m somewhat forgiving of repeats because newbies don’t often realize that the easiest way to search fluther is through google.

Comedian's avatar

whoa! I just realized what I said! I meant to say “I feel” wow. That is a bad spelling error. I need to slow down on my typing

bythebay's avatar

As a newbie; I have to say all questions are new to me and therefore relevant!

Snoopy's avatar

I agree bythebay. Plus as new people come to Fluther, there are that many more new thoughts and opinons….

welcome to fluther!

bythebay's avatar

@ Snoopy—thank you for the welcome, I’ll gladly entertain your “old” questions!

bobisho's avatar

I think its fine when you ask a question again, people usually post a link to the other answers anyway. I once did that and one answer was a link to another question really similar too it, it was cool, no anger or anything.

gailcalled's avatar

I just repeated myself from several years ago. I liked my answer then and I like it now.

gailcalled's avatar

@The_unconservative one: Probably better to think of a term other than “kind of retarded” if you have a valid criticism to offer.

bythebay's avatar

@gailcalled: I’m fairly certian that Failin, TheAntiStup, er, I mean, @The_unconservative_one, has nothing valid to offer.

fireside's avatar

lol, he’s just repeating Nimis.

gailcalled's avatar

True; third time is just as unamusing as first, however.

@The_unconservative_one – as far as i can tell, she is right. you haven’t offer anything positive to any conversation i have seen you involved in yet. But that’s okay, you’ll either learn how to play well with others or you will be ignored or booted.

The_unconservative_one's avatar

@fireside I can say that about you as well. you obviously haven’t been following my conversations. Can you give ONE example of whatt you claim?

The_unconservative_one's avatar

@fireside Still waiting…........

[mod says:] Please stay on topic and take it to PMs if you want to discuss something else.

I think it’s perfectly OK. If even one person has never seen the question, then it’s NOT a repeat question!
