How to get my hair thicker?

Asked by punkrockworld (960points) October 9th, 2008

Hey, i’m a twenty year old girl and it bothers me that I don’t have thick long and healthy hair.
I’ve never colored my hair and i dont even straighten it. What can I do about this problem ?
Except hair extensions who mess up your hair even more ..

Have you tried back-combing it? It’s not a permanent solution but it would add a bit of volume.

I honestly don’t know – my problem is the exact opposite!

I think there are only suggestions to make your hair appear thicker.

To actually make it thicker, you’d have to build a time machine, go back in time, hunt down your ancestors and finagle a way for them to mate with people with genes for thicker hair.
Personally, I find the notion of ruffie-ing my great-great-grandfather to be a bit disconcerting.

That would be problematic though, as that would essentially erm…undo your existence.

How ‘bout a different haircut?

The only solution to that I can think of besides that of Nimis is hair transplantation, and I don’t think that’s really what you’re looking for at all.

I have one tip for making it seem thicker.
I have the same problem as shadling, my hair is super-thick, and when I ran out of shampoo, my roommate let me borrow hers. So, I was really grateful for the shampoo, but she buys this Garnier shampoo that says something to the effect of “for ‘hard to grow long’ hair” on the bottle. I didn’t think much of it, but I swear my hair was even thicker than usual. I could barely get it into a ponytail. If that’s what you’re going for you should give the stuff a try.

My gf has thin hair. She says use Pantene ProV volumizing shampoo. Blow dry it upside down, and then before you style it put some Biolage thermal active setting spray (pre heat styling treatment—only good if you’re going to use a curling iron). Then use Pantene ProV volumizing hair spray. She’s 50 though and her style’s not quite the latest and greatest, but there you go.

Consider yourself lucky Punk. My hair is soooo think and it grows sooooooo fast. I have to get it cut like every 2 to 3 months. I used to have it long and in a ponytail, but it just started giving me headaches because of the weight. Like whenever I got out of the shower, it would be SO painful. Now it’s short but it’s still really thick. Want to switch?

HELL YEAH I WANT TO SWITCH!! I really hate my hairrr and there’s nothing i can do about it.I guess I’ll just have to suck it up =[

wash your hair, and blow dry it, but blow dry your hair with your hair down ( as if your bending over and looking at your knees)letting your hair hang below your face, I hope I explained that well enough that you understand, it makes you hair look stronger with lots of volume

They say highlights can add volume because they expand the hair shaft. I have fine hair too and these are some of the ways I have achieved thicker looking hair.

I use thickening lotions, Redken has a great one. But there are plenty around. I dry my hair by using my fingers and lifting at the root area and blowing the root all over, this adds volume. Then I can do whatever afterwards. Like using a hot iron.

Either a blunt cut adds volume or alternatively various layers with various low lights add texture and the appearance of volume. I find my hair looks thicker when darker as opposed to lighter.

I am not fond of hairspray, but one tip someone gave me was comb your hair upside down, spray then flick back. It is fuller.

To make your hair appear thicker (and I guess you’ve tried this already) put a big , egg sized glob of mousse all over it right after it’s shampooed then blow dry. You can also try a glob of gel. What my daughter did was get hers cut short but flipped up in layers all over the back, left the top/bangs long and had it colored in 3 different shades of blonde. It looks so cute and it’s off her neck.
