Back Pain help?

Asked by TrenchantWit (290points) October 11th, 2008

I had a back spasm today and pulled my lower back out, im starting a new job on Monday that requires physical labor any suggestions on a quick back pain solution? Would running on a elliptical machine help or hurt it more?

my back pain was cured by a dr named john sarno. Google him and something called TMS. Tension myositis syndrome. Have an open mind. I’m living proof he cures.

Get some of those thermacare patches. Those things really helped me when I hurt my back. If it’s possible try getting a script for a muscle relaxer like flexeril too. If not take ibuprofen (600 mg with food three times a day). Hope you feel better!

ice the affected area. Ice, ice, ice.

John Sarno is an orthopod who, after twenty or so years of traditional orthopedics, decided that lower back pain was largely caused by stored-up anger. It is an interesting theory but not helpful for an acute episode. I use moist heat and bed rest for several days; then anger-management and tailor-designed stretches.

Pros and Cons of Sarno’s approach.

john sarnos theory is very in debth and takes patience and time. He literally is my doctor and a very intelligent man. He wrote several books and you can also check out the TMS forum. Google it. I never thought I’d be pain free. I have herniated discs and “nerve damage” after learning as to why I was in so much pain and btw it wasn’t physical reasons. Sarnos theory is about the subconscience mind. I had doctors tell me that I’ll never be able to walk and I was 16. Guess what? I’m 23 now and run marathons! If your in that much pain youd try ANYTHING. Good luck !

I had no cons with Sarno. That link doesn’t work unfortunately on my iPhone I’ll try and look at it on my laptop. But with me and the other people I know who’ve been cured there were no cons. I was told I had to go under the knife thousands of times and Sarno saved me from that. I couldn’t wear high heels or sis in class for longer than 10minutes. I was in bad shape! I’m not saying heat etc doesn’t help the symptoms but it won’t help the cause.
