Would you prefer an 11-hour workday (with 1 hour for lunch), if it meant that you always had a 3-day weekend?

Asked by JackAdams (6574points) October 13th, 2008

I worked for an employer that had such a set-up for his employees, where they could either work Monday – Thursday (11 hours each day) then have Friday – Sunday off, or work Tuesday – Friday, with Saturday – Monday off.

Does that kind of work schedule appeal to you? And if it does (and you aren’t working it, yet), how likely is it that your employer will/can offer such a schedule? Do you think the majority of Americans would like a schedule like that?

I know I sure did!

YES!!
Currently I work a flex schedule and have every other Friday off. I would love a four day work week every week.

If I did not already make my own schedule I would love it!

That’s what the people in my department do.
It’s pretty awesome, if I do say so myself.

EMT’s schedules are like that, I love long weekends too.

Since I usually work a 9 or 10 hour day anyway, Hell yes!

I didn’t really expect to get any responses where someone said that they enjoyed having only 2 days off, instead of three…

I wonder WHY more employers don’t offer such a schedule to their workers, considering how popular it is?

I heard/read (somewhere?) that this will become more the norm in the near future, due to energy conservation. This type of workweek not only saves gas and reduces vehicle emissions due to fewer miles being driven, but also allows the physical building to be closed, thus saving the energy required to run at full power for an entire day. Obviously this results in financial savings on the part of both the employer and the employee(s).

I work at a large company with over 20,000 employees and many departments have started allowing workers to “work at home” one day a week. It saves gas money for those who have a long commute.

I also find that I get more work done at home, away from the distractions of my office. Am I weird?

I worked that when I was working as a prep cook and I loved it. The days were long but the three days off were so worth it!

I would love this. Everyone should be allowed flexibility in their schedule… We need to quit living 19th century lives. Oh and lunch should be 1.5–2 hours so we have time to take a wee snooze after eating. This way we will have the energy and clarity of mind to get us through the last six hours.

I would absolutely love that. I’m on a three day weekend right now and I’d definitely be willing to work a little longer during the day if it always meant having three days off. If only…
