Not being vegan, I have to ask, what about apple pie wouldn’t be vegan? isn’t even the shortening in the crust a vegetable shortening?

In the past I’ve always made pie crust with butter. I’m not really a big fan of shortening… I could probably just substitute a margarine for the butter, but sometimes that changes things, and I was wondering if anyone had particular ways of doing it.

I get it. I’m not vegan but it would be great to see some low ca recipes for pies for the holidays.

Margarine has dairy in it though doesn’t it? I must admit I’ve never seen one without it.

I’d like to see if you get a recipe, my daughter is a vege, and my sister-in-law is vegan, so it would be nice to be able to provide something for her when she comes over for a meal.

You can buy soy margarine or Nucoa.

I would use crisco vegetable shortening. My best friend isn’t even vegan, just a huge baking fiend, and she swears by the stuff.

I use butter too, but I have to admit that her pie crusts taste better than mine. darn her.

There are also recipes for pie crusts that take ‘oil’ instead of the shortening or butters. You might try those. Then they would be ‘vegan’ I think, especially if you used canola oil for example.

There are a few margarine’s that don’t have dairy. You have to read every label.
I just use oil or shortening. I always forget the pats of butter before putting on the top crust and no one seems to notice. So my nephew knows that the pies I make are safe. LOL! Oh, and I also use tapioca for helping the juices thicken.

My Mom makes the best pies ever and she has always used the old standby Crisco.
Mammas little baby loves short’nin, short’nin
Oh and she uses nothing but Gravenstein apples which can be found right now at farmers markets and such. Truly, they make the best apple pie. Just don’t slice them too thin, they have a tendency to turn to applesauce by the time they are done baking if you do. The other thing she does is sprinkle raw sugar on the top crust and it makes this crunchy sweet goodness.

I always use Earth Balance buttery spread for my vegan baking. Frankly shortening scares the crap out of me. What I ended up doing last night was just taking a butter pie-crust recipe and switching Earth Balance in for the butter. It worked charmingly.
