Depends on what you really like to do. If you like hiking and camping, you could try 1) Big Basin or Sam McDonald parks (they link to each other through 14 miles of trails); 2)John Muir Woods--you can camp there, too. Nice waterfalls in season; 3) you can also camp in SF (little known secret) near Baker Beach and hike around the point. The Sutro Bath remains are cool to kick around in and walking around the point from the Bay to Ocean Beach offers stunning views.

If you want culture, check out 1) the Monterey Peninsula. Great Aquarium. Interesting literature and architectural historical areas in Carmel. 2) Napa or Sonoma for wine-tasting, excellent restaurants and cooking classes.

Mendocino is also a quaint little arts and crafts town on the coast. Amazing wildlife, but gets a bit foggy.

Mount Tamalpias is great for hiking. Sausalito is a quaint seaside town (you can take the ferry over) and I really enjoy Sonoma for wine tasting. Less crowded than Napa and just as scenic.
