Check your telephone listings for “Telephone Pioneers”. This is a national group of ex-telephone company employees who take old computers and totally renovate them and give the upgraded computers to schools.

there is a microcenter in Long Island. If you buy a new computer there, they will recycle the computer free of charge. If you need to just have it recycled, they charge something like 20–30 dollars. also there is a location in Jersey, not sure if one of the other is closer to you or not.

No matter what. Destroy your old hard drive if you are not going to use it.
Best way is to hammer a nail through it.
