What do unsliced water chestnuts look like?

Asked by amazon (44points) October 18th, 2008

The only time I’ve ever seen a water chestnut is sliced up in Chinese food.

What does the actual vegetable look like? Are they used in any other kinds of cooking?

I’ve seen them peeled in a can. They look like like whiteish rocks, about the size of a pingpong ball.

Here is a picture.

One of my favorite hors d,oeuvres is rumaki, which is a chicken liver on a slice of water chestnut wrapped in bacon.

@Marina, are they ready yet, I’m kind of hungry.
