Politics aside, does John McCain creep you out?

Asked by kruger_d (6231points) October 20th, 2008

I realize he is not comfortable on camera, but the way he responds to everything Obama says with that snide, dismissive smile really creeps me out.

He kind of reminds me of a turle.

squirbel's avatar

I think what creeps me out about McCain is his posture.

jvgr's avatar

Yes, I find him creepy, kind of a risen from the dead look about him.
It’s also creepy that he has absolutely no principles since everything he believed 2 years ago, he no longer believes.

Hobbes's avatar

God yes. He looks absolutely batshit insane when he smiles. And he blinks all. the. time. Like, forty times in twenty seconds when he’s debating. And he has all these weird tics, and giggles whenever Obama says something in a debate. He just comes off as a crazy old man.

eatmunky's avatar

@jvgr: I think the whole idea was “politics aside”.

at first I thought he was really weird. He looks weird, acts weird, has weird posture. But then I heard that he can’t lift his arms due to war injuries and it all kinda made sense. but otherwise, i don’t think he’s that creepy.

John McCain…. the rhino :D

bear;
you’ve got to be kidding. And what’s the matter with being Muslim anyway? That’s like saying that since Timothy McVay is a Christian all Christians are terrorists!

El_Cadejo's avatar

I swear hes gotta be trying to be this much like bush i mean come on with the faces. Cant he just look normal for ten minutes?

iriemuffin's avatar

Completely creeps me out!

MacBean's avatar

Not in the past. But now he looks… I don’t know. Dead. And I don’t mean he looks old, because honestly I think he looks pretty good for a guy in his 70s with health problems. There’s just something about him that makes me think, “That funeral home needs to hire a more skilled embalmer…”

critter1982's avatar

No he doesn’t really creep me out. Some of his gestures are awkward but that’s because of his war injuries.

@Hobbes: I bet he doesn’t blink more than Pelosi…..HaHaHa

pelosi blink count

I can’t find the funny pic of McCain at the end of the debate when he was lost hand sticking his tongue out at Obama’s butt, but that was a creepy looking pic!

squirbel's avatar

Bear08 – let me get this straight. Say it straight – you foctard.

Are you saying:

Obama is a Muslim – pretending not to be a Muslim? As though he started pretending during his childhood to be Christian? Are you calling Obama a fake?

Because if you are, say it straight like a focking man.

squirbel's avatar

@johnpowell – that photo is hilarious

DandyDear711's avatar

@judi – I think john powell posted it above – click WTF…

AlfredaPrufrock's avatar

I thought his audible, heavy growl-like breathing during the third debate was a bit alarming. I expected EMS to be called in at any moment. But no, I don’t find him scary.

Judi's avatar

I keep getting an error when I look up Johnpowell’s WTF link.

@judi – I right clicked on his link and opened in a new tab.

jrpowell's avatar

@Bear – That is total bullshit and you know it. We know what you were implying.

PIXEL's avatar

I really want Obama to win the election. His middle name doesn’t scare me at all. Not that big a deal he’s not muslim.

PIXEL's avatar

Ew a John McCain supporter.

Bear08's avatar

I am in no way a McCain supporter.

jrpowell's avatar

@Bear – Lets say your comment wasn’t directed at Obama.

Why did you post that here?

It was completely irrelevant to the conversation.

jrpowell's avatar

@Bear – Because if it was removed it would mask your ignorance.

edit :: Nice dodge. Now you can answer my question. Why did you post it?

girlofscience's avatar

@Bear08: I wish I knew you in person so you could see me wearing this.

jessturtle23's avatar

I don’t find him creepy but I do find it creepy that all the other Republicans running bailed out of the race so early and just gave it to the guy. It’s like they tricked him into running like a bad game of “not it”. He was either dumb enough to take the job after the last eight years of Bush hell or brave enough. Not sure which one yet.

fireside's avatar

Since the question was about McCain, I figure Bear must have meant that he thinks McCain is a Muslim.

shilolo's avatar

[Fluther moderator] Please lets keep the discussion on point.

squirbel's avatar

@bear08 – You cannot deny that you were referring to Obama – that’s an outright lie.

squirbel: ”@bear08: Stop being ignorant.

bear08: “squirbel – Like I said Pretending.”

If you take those two comments in quick succession, it is immediately apparent that you were referring to Obama, since you had to have clicked my link to come back with that rebuttal. Saying “stop being ignorant” says nothing about Obama.

Your statement insinuated your position – so stop lying about your intentions.

And I am not an angry man. I don’t even have a penis. I am an angry rodent in the presence of blatant, hateful ignorance. So get it straight – I’m an angry squirbel.

:p

fireside's avatar

I know I’d be an angry man if I didn’t have a penis… :p

Judi's avatar

fireside made me laugh! Fluve all the way!!

SuperMouse's avatar

He does creep me out. It’s that pinched smile that makes him look like he’s in pain.

augustlan's avatar

Yeah, he does a little bit. I could get over it, if I supported his policies.

emilyrose's avatar

he’s so stiff! that is what weirds me out. looks like his arms are made of wood.

jessturtle23's avatar

Um, his arm are like that from the war. I’m sure you knew that though and I just didn’t get the joke.

gailcalled's avatar

I don’t get the joke either, and find the idea of judging a man by these superficial issues is juvenile and demeaning to the respondents. McCain has a medical history that causes the issues that you find “creepy.”

El_Cadejo's avatar

That may be true in some cases gail but as JP posted above, theres no excuses for this COME ON!

[Fluther Moderator:] @Bear08: Please keep your remarks on-topic and sensible. I encourage you to review our guidelines. Vague postings about “muslims pretending not to be muslims” that (supposedly?) don’t have anything to do with the topic at hand aren’t suitable for Fluther.

gailcalled's avatar

Uber; go give Valetta some lurve and stop being silly.

fireside's avatar

I don’t think that he looks are that creepy to me, plus if he looks like he is in pain it is probably because he is. I popped one vertebrae out of alignment years ago and I still get stiff all the time. I can’t imagine how much worse he had it compared to me popping out a single vertebrae.

Besides, if looks really mattered in politics, we may have missed out on this guy

gailcalled's avatar

Today, anyone can be photographed as looking like the missing link.

critter1982's avatar

McCain may not be good looking but he does have good taste.

ahem…POLITICS ASIDE, does John McCain creep you out?”.

Let’s be a little more mature and not jump to our political guns. I don’t think that was the intention of the question.

and for the record, Palin = V-PILF.

@critter: um… Yea i just realized I’m like 20 posts too late. Soo… I retract my previous statement. And accept the status of goofus. My apologies, I was just referring to the people that were getting very worked up. I thought this was a funny light-hearted question, and it seemed to turn malicious, and I was commenting on said maliciousness. I would delete my old response, but I apparently don’t have that option.

Uber: My apologies to Vladetta for getting her name wrong. Tell her I think she is one hot shrimp, whatever the nomenclature.

SoapChef's avatar

You know, what I think creeps me out about McCain most, is his opinion of women. In his book he revels in the idea that he loved to “chase tail”. When he returned from the war and his former swimsuit model wife had been disfigured in a car wreck, he got rid of her. When his wife Cindy made some remark about his thinning hair, he called her a trollop and a c**t. There is a report out there of a time when he raised his hand to a woman (in a wheelchair no less) as if to slap her. Finally, in the last debate his mockery of the “health of the mother” when discusssing the abortion issue is enough to give me the willies.
@ Augustian great answer by the way, I agree.

El_Cadejo's avatar

gail: no hard feelings :) and your right, she is one hot shrimp:P

critter1982's avatar

@soap: He and his wife were separated prior to her car wreck. Do you have anything to backup the whole trollop and c**t remarks? Likewise the wheelchair incident?

SoapChef's avatar

@ critter

If you mean they were separated by distance, this is true. He was in the Hanoi Hilton at the time. She had the car wreck in 1969.

This is from “Make-Believe Maverick” Rolling Stone
In the spring of 1979, while conducting official business for the Navy, the still-married McCain encountered Cindy Lou Hensley, a willowy former cheerleader for USC. Mutually smitten, the two lied to each other about their ages. The 24-year-old Hensley became 27; the 42-year-old McCain became 38. For nearly a year the two carried on a cross-country romance while McCain was still living with Carol: Court documents filed with their divorce proceeding indicate that they “cohabitated as husband and wife” for the first nine months of the affair.

Although McCain stresses in his memoir that he married Cindy three months after divorcing Carol, he was still legally married to his first wife when he and Cindy were issued a marriage license from the state of Arizona. The divorce was finalized on April 2nd, 1980. McCain’s second marriage — rung in at the Arizona Biltmore with Gary Hart as a groomsman — was consummated only six weeks later, on May 17th. The union gave McCain access to great wealth: Cindy, whose father was the exclusive distributor for Budweiser in the Phoenix area, is now worth an estimated $100 million. In the spring of 1979, while conducting official business for the Navy, the still-married McCain encountered Cindy Lou Hensley, a willowy former cheerleader for USC. The incident about Cindy comes from the book “The Real McCain” by Cliff Schecter
The wheelchair incident comes from six statements made by family members of the POWs who were present that day.

cyndyh's avatar

Yeah, soapchef, the things he says creep me. His looks aren’t the issue. The disrespectful manner he takes with people creeps me, too.

Cardinal's avatar

To answer the question; No.

GAMBIT's avatar

Yes I find him very creepy. His head looks like it doesn’t fit on his neck which gives him a snowman type appearance and his shoulders and eyes are so glaring that it seems he is blinking out a message in Morse Code to one of his Army buddies but what I find the most alarming is the scar that is on the side of his head that reminds me of some type of Frankenstein brain transplant.

Bri_L's avatar

Nope doesn’t creep me out.

Trance24's avatar

He reminds me of a robot. Very slow moving, can’t lift his arms all the way up. Also his faces creep me out.

Nullo's avatar

No, not really. What creeped me out was the way that his campaign people kept emphasizing over and over again how he was wounded in war and now couldn’t raise his arms over his head. Seriously people, that’s not how you get anything but sympathy points! Even FDR, who couldn’t walk, was given a strong image to campaign with.
