Do you like 8 bit music?

Asked by elchoopanebre (3079points) October 21st, 2008

You know, songs with a beat mixed with the bleeps and bloops that old school video game scores were composed of?

I’m starting to get into this stuff and I can’t get enough of it!

If you like it and have any artist suggestions, I’m all ears.

I do, as geeky as it sounds. You should check out Megaman 9 for the Wii, Xbox360, or PS3. The musicians created an all-new, NES-style soundtrack, and it’s awesome.

My favorites are Galaxy Man’s Theme and Tornado Man’s Theme.

Jamendo is a great source of new, free music. Check out the results for chiptune or 8bit. Maybe even listen to some user generated chiptune playlists!

Enjoy!

DO I EVER!?! My favorite is 8bit betty (if you like those songs, you can grab all her stuff on the site and here)

I would also check out last.fm and listen to chiptune there. Which is how i found Dubmood whos pretty awesome as well(theres some free tracks on his page). “Kenny The Toffelskater” is a good one

@tonedef you never end nerdiness! :P

I too am a total nerd\geek when it comes to 8bit. I love it to death, not to mention the hilarity that ensues when me and my friends are sitting a stop light and my music is playing.
FIrst Song: 30 Seconds to Mars; A Beautiful Lie
Second Song: Assemblage 23; 30,000 Feet
Third Song: Zelda’s Thyme
Fourth Song: Mario’s Dungeon Thyme

Such strange looks from people, especially when we start to sing along with the beeps and bloops.
As far as finding songs, the only ones I really have are all from games and I downloaded them in a massive (100meg [Ha! that was actually A LOT of songs]) torrent file.

@jtvoar16 i really wouldnt consider either of those band 8bit by any means 30 seconds to mars is rock and Assemblage 23 is EBM .(assemblage 23 is awesome, 30k is a pretty sad song though.)

I know, I was saying that people think it is strange when i have “normal” music like 30 seconds, playing, then suddenly it sounds like I am playing my old NES.
It’s like when I have Slipknot playing then the Greensleeves comes up on random. I just think it is funny how expansive my playlist is.

ah gotcha, i misunderstood. And i agree nothing better than driving around blasting 8bit music ^_^

it’s okay. I type what my brain says, but it don’t realize that other people don’t read it like my brain hears it, the resulting end is a lot of confusion.

Great question! I recently got into 8bit, and would love to find more. I’ve been listening to Henry Homesweet a lot. I’m also a fan of Crystal Castles – they’re not purely 8bit but they use a bit of it (no pun intended) in their music.

@uber – Yes. Nerdiness is for life.

I certainly do. Not strictly 8-bit all the time, but definitely there or thereabouts in the ‘chiptune’ genre would be my current rave, Amiga Agia. Nice fella gives his music away for free, too! (http://www.myspace.com/amigaagia) Also quite fond of zentrix.

I also like a lot of more generic electronica that feature 8-bit sounds, such as Freezepop.

Check out www.8bitcollective.com :)

I love the classic nintendo tunes (Mario Bros. Zelda, Etc.) but not a big fan of new stuff… to be perfectly honest.
