How long does is it normal for it to hurt after a wisdom tooth extraction?

Asked by Celeste00 (786points) October 21st, 2008

I had a pretty bad infection for a week, and then got my wisdom tooth taken out. For days I couldn’t sleep and I’m currently living on Vicodin and other painkillers. I’d love to stop taking the painkillers sometime soon. How long did it hurt for you?

I just had two wisdom teeth removed, but not from infection. The pain only lasted for 5 days, but the first three were pretty bad. I was on oxycodone, which was strong enough to counter the pain of the extraction.

I hope you feel better!

I had four wisdom teeth removed. Two were impacted (i.e. not exposed). None infected. 3 sites stopped hurting after a week or so…

The last one ached for a good month…until finally a deep stitch worked itself out and then all was well after that…

I had 2 removed from opposite sides and think I had a really good dental surgeon as I was literally out drinking the 2nd night after.

To reduce the amount of time it takes to heal rinse with salt water liberally. After every meal as well as at the beginning/end of the day at the very least. I did it judiciously and it may have helped with the process.

I had four removed and promptly got dry sockets because the painkillers made me think I was all better and could go back to drinking from straws and smoking. Dry sockets is the worst pain I have ever felt and I have had a lot of painful shit happen. Don’t drink from straws or smoke. The pain should go away in a week or so unless you get dry sockets and that goes on for a few weeks and you have to get your gums packed every day.

@jessturtle23 I’m pretty sure I have a dry socket too. It feels as if someone was drilling in my jaw and ear constantly and it’s been 5 days since surgery. Vicodin’s not even helping at this point, and to top it off, the painkillers are giving me nosebleeds.

What did you do to help your dry socket?

@celeste While I presume you are going to contact your surgeon first thing in the AM….in case you weren’t going to…..I urge you to do so.

Pain not controlled by narcotics can indicate something amiss. Dry socket or infection would be at the top of the list. Unless there is a contraindication to doing so….you might want to consider adding anti-inflammatories (e.g. advil or aleve) along w/ the vicodin.

Best wishes.

Call your oral surgeon and tell them you think you have dry sockets and they will have you come in so they can pack your holes. It takes a while for the pain to go away so the sooner the better.

I have an appointment for tomorrow noon. Hopefully they’ll have some good news or good drugs to help. Thanks all of you for your tips.
