Do you change the station during pledge drives?

Asked by SuperMouse (30845points) October 21st, 2008

I am a dedicated NPR listener. I listen daily and I am a contributing member. But I’ll admit it right here and now, I change the station during pledge week. I do experience slight pangs of guilt as I flip the station, but I just can’t stand listening to the pledge requests. Am I the only one?

I do too. But I don’t donate money to them. I don’t listen to NPR but I watch a lot of PBS.

I flip as well. It’s annoying. Watching that is like watching an infomercial. Blegh.

Plus, the way I see it, if you’ve already contributed, they’re not targeting you anyway…
(not that I’ve contributed)

What I don’t understand is why PBS insists on showing such terrible programming during the pledge week. I like PBS, I’ll donate money to watch the shows that I like to watch, but I hate having to watch hour after hour of Yanni Live at the Acropolis and, my personal favorite, Roy Orbison and Friends. Shudder

I get a kick out of our local NPR fund drives. I know many of the contributors, it seems, and their comments about the station are read on-air.

Plus the team that does the work is funny, self-deprecating and also local. I give every year because I love the programming, much of which is not national.

PBS is different. The reruns of Victor Borge continue to turn me to hysterics personified but there are a lot of very peculiar reruns. I send money, however. It is the only reason I own a TV.

I flip stations if I have already pledged. If not, I stick with it. Guilt, maybe.

I can’t stand it either; I never watch. Donate, but don’t watch.

Count me up for finding the pledge drives annoying. I donate to TPR and PBS. But during the times when they come with hat in hand, I switch it off.

I don’t change the channel- I’d rather listen to a spokesperson compare the price of a dollar-a-day donation to a cup of coffee each day than to listen to commercials for local car dealers and such on commercial stations. There’s just not really an alternative.
