What do you think will cause the end of the world?

Asked by generalspecific (1874points) October 24th, 2008

Exploding star? Black hole sucking up the whole earth? The 2012 Planet X/Nibiru scenario?
Robots taking over and killing the whole human race?
Pandemic flu? Nuclear war? Global warming?
There are many options.. which do you think is most likely? Which one would you prefer to happen?

I had to ask after watching this.

In 5 billion years or so the sun will go nova and swell, becoming a red giant and engulfing the rocky inner planets. That would include this one.
I think it’s supposed to happen on a Thursday.

Are you asking about the planet exploding or the end of civilization as we know it, or the end of Mankind?

The Big Crunch, or as they say in the Bible Belt, when god decides to eat his bag of crunchy potato chips.

MANKIND…....

I believe this world will end as scripture and propechy says it will end.
The next step is a one world currency.
Then a one world government that brings “peace”
And then all of a sudden he will turn on the people…in the middle of this 7 year “peace” treaty.
After this judgement comes.
ANd then a 1000 year reign of Christ.
After that there comes a new heaven and a new earth.
You can read it all in Revelation.
Quite interesting to note that things are shaping up to go that way. It mostly revolves around Israel. Check it out.

The world and all life will end when I die. As far as I’m concerned my mind is the only thing I know exsists and everything else might not actually be there.

Nostradamus said that the beginning of the end will start after the black leader takes seat,, so I guess the end is coming, I always thought that we might face a Dolbuk or Evangelion type of scenario at some point… I wanna stay home for the end of the world, that’s for sure :)

chyna's avatar

@flameboi The black leader Nostradamus is thought to be talking about is thought to be Sadam Hussein.

Whatever it is, I think stupid people will play a big part. There may be a couple of smart people in there running things, pulling the strings, but it will be stupid people that are our downfall.
I mean stupid, as in not able to see right from wrong, not able to question others orders, and to just blindly follow. I hope i am wrong, but that seems to be what usually happens.

flameboi's avatar

@Chyna
I’ve consulted that with an historian told me he is not, that in the early 20th. century it was believed that it would be a Pope (as the Roman Catholic Church was the most powerful institution), he explained me the whole thing… not that I’m a believer, I just like to read

At my favorite place, drinking coffee
Me: Hey look at those emo kids
My best friend: Shh, don’t look at them, they will feel bad and probably would kill themselves…
Other friend: Give me a brake Luiz, you are one of them, you even have a voodoo doll hanging on your car, you just can do the outfit part because you work, other than that, you are just like them…
Me: I’m not, I feel sad from time to time but it has nothing to do with it
My best friend: Yes you are, you and your black outfit and your sad songs…
Me: O.k. I feel bad, I gotta go
My best friend,: Just please don’t kill yourself
laughs

i think nuclear war. i hope not during my lifetime, or during my daughter’s lifetime.

augustlan's avatar

I don’t know how it will end, but I’d hope for something quick like a supernova, rather than a long drawn out decline. I hope I’m having a wonderful time one minute, and gone the next.

AstroChuck's avatar

Sorry. Our sun just isn’t massive enough to go supernova. But just a regular nova should kill you quick enough, so you’ve got that going for you, which is nice.

stevenb's avatar

Ziiiiing!!!

gotta love chuck

I’m kinda partial to him.

Emo is not goth. Goth = voodoo dolls, black clothes etc
Emo = swoop hair, girl pants, certain musical tastes, cutting is cool

The end of the world….a perfect end to me would be that it was over in the blink of an eye. Just over totally, whether by explosion or whatever.
Worst case would be epidemic that would kill ppl slowly.

watchman220's avatar

God will remove His people in the blink of an eye.
Then those who are unbelievers will be alive for the terror of God’s wrath, because they received not the love of the truth that they might be saved.
But GOd has made a way of escape. It’s called Jesus.
And requires nothing but that you believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and God raised Him from the dead after three days.
WHen you truly believe that Jesus is Lord in your life, you will be saved from God’s wrath, and subject to God’s kingdom.

But I would rather be slave to the King of Kings, than slave to this world.

God will send wrath…and it lasts a while. But even then it is not the end. Because he comes to reign after that wrath for 1000 years.

After the 1000 years He again wipes out the evil armies of Satan. And then we see a new heaven and a new earth.
What that will look like…is hard to tell. It’s pretty far off.

But the last days of this time are not so far off.
Blink of an eye sounds good to me.

Oh boy! I have the terror of God’s wrath to look forward to. Yes!

I’m coming to this thread way too late, and plus it largely wasn’t taken seriously, but here’s a serious answer from somebody who’s actually thought hard about this question:

Stephen Petranek: 10 ways the world could end

Stephen Petranek was the editor-in-chief of Discover magazine. In that 30-minute video he lists what he believes are the 10 most likely ways the world could end, and suggests some possible approaches to dealing with them (instead of getting all emo about it ;-)).

watchman220's avatar

When science finally pulls it’s head out of it’s butt…it will find God is the name of the particle or force beyond what they can see.
That God is the thing that holds all matter together. That by God all things consist.
That by God, the world had begun, and by God the world will end, by God’s plan, in God’s time.

You do not have to believe this…and I am not forcing you to believe this. So don;t tell me about me shoving my opinions down your throats…
But God does have a clear plan from Genesis to Revelation.

Ron_C's avatar

I think the world will end because the ultra-religious will get what they desire, a world without contraception and abortion. The population will rise and the average intelligence will drop because no intelligent person will want to bring children into this world. Eventually, there will be a war caused by over-crowding but described as a religious war and a war on science. Those that don’t starve to death will degenerate into mindless scavengers.

Eventually the sun will go nova and wipe the remaining sad devolved creatures from the universe.

Judi's avatar

@watchman220 , I have always been taught (from a child in Church) that we have nothing to fear from science. Science may give us a few, “Ah Ha!” moments when something mysterious has been clarified, but in the end, if what we believe is true, science will validate God. Jesus was constantly admonishing us to “fear not.” No reason to hate science, I see God in science all the time. Humility means being open to surprises God might have in store for you rather than holding on to a previous understanding that has now been made clearer.
I will stop now. I have a dentist appointment in 45 minuets and the valium is starting to kick in. I might get myself in trouble if I keep typing.
