Does everyone have a comment about everything these days?

Asked by Trustinglife (6668points) October 26th, 2008

It seems to me that there is this fairly new trend of everyone commenting on everything. Especially online.

I’ve seen this constant sharing of opinions increase with the spread of Web 2.0: blogs, blog comments, Facebook, Twitter, Fluther, etc. (Not to mention our hundreds of TV channels and commentary shows on all subjects.)

Do you see this as a trend? (It didn’t use to be like this, did it?)
Is it a good thing, bad thing?
If you participate in this opinion-giving online, do you find yourself more opinionated in real life?
If you are, do you like being that way?

I look forward to your commenting on this question! (Ha!)

i think the more ideas/opinoins are exchanged the more it gets ppl thinking ans opening up their minds to other points of view.
I think thats a good thing, and I think more ppl are staying home of late and finding other avenues of entertainment.
I’ve always been opinionated and very willing to share!

You couldn’t mean me, could you?

I don’t think it’s everyone. But the internet has made it possible for everyone who wants to to self publish. That means a lot more people are rendering opinions, and possibly, influencing others.

It still takes an ability to write. Otherwise, people won’t read gibberish.

I don’t think anyone besides those who actually habituate fluther, pays attention to the opinions of others here. Even amongst flutherites, I suspect there are only a few people who others really listen to.

@daloon I listen to everyone on here. Tho i may not like everyone’s opinion, i will give them a shot before i decide they’re wrong.

@deaddolly, exactly my point. You may listen to everyone, but I’m sure there are only a very few you actually pay attention to.

deaddolly's avatar

no, i pay attention to no one really. not many on here share my views an/or lifestlye. some just come across better than others.

@deaddolly: You seem to have changed your avatar to something that scares the shit out of me once again, I dig. Who was the dude in your last one?

deaddolly's avatar

It was Ed Gein. He’s a fave of mine. lol I like to change things up every now and then!

@deaddolly: I KNEW IT! The guy who hosts the RHPS near me dresses up like him almost every Halloween. :-P

lol I bet I’d like him. If you lived in Wisconsin at any point in time; you’d have to know about Ed. Ppl still drive up to his hometown.

I think people just want to be involved and have a voice whether it is right, wrong, or indifferent. Variety is the spice of life and being able to read about and participate in all the give and take here on Fluther is really enjoyable, in my opinion. I’ve only been here 2 days and already I’m starting to feel comfortable.

I think, in general, it’s a good thing to hear opinions that differ from your own. It can solidify your beliefs, or make you re-examine them. It’s probably really helpful to those too shy to offer opinions in “real life”, too. The more the merrier, as long as it’s all respectful. Intelligent and respectful is even better!

Increased interactivity is really the hallmark of Web 2.0.
The advances in networking technology, new programming languages and accessibility have created the perfect soup for individuals to finally have a voice.

Web 2.0 is to the internet that Ham radio was to…um..well..radio.

I personally think that the free exchange is great because people are able to investigate things that they may not have ever been exposed to otherwise. It does take a good personal filter though to sift through the garbage.

I guess that is where I put Fluther ahead of the Web 2.0 curve.

All this opinionation is great for me. I have an inordinate
number of people in my physical social life, but they may tend to be a little bit alike.
Not here, though.

@SusanC, I love that – “opinionation!” What a great word coinage.

I wanted to answer my own question too!

I had a slightly negative tone when I asked the question. But I really liked what so many of you wrote. Reading your responses, I remembered how pleasurable I’ve found it to be able to comment on so many things. I used to just take information in passively, but especially participating on Fluther has been great for me that way.

I tend to be fairly reserved in my life, and my intention with how I participate on Fluther is to be as uncensored as I can. It’s been a great practice of mine. (Not always comfortable!)

2.0 overall has been great in supporting me in that overall.

Aside from all that… I read baseball news all the time, and I am often blown away by the lack of intelligence or tact when a blog has comments. Sometimes makes me wish that there weren’t 2.0 – or that it were restricted somehow!

Also, I have a concern that the focus on commenting on EVERYTHING represents a trend away from listening and receiving. With the open invitation to comment on everything, it can be tempting to just spread our opinions all around, everywhere, without taking something in first. This is a good reminder for me to practice what I preach.

I find if I don’t have a helpful comment, I will either leave, or make a 2nd grade attempt at humor.

That said….

booger!
