Fix Too much ink coverage in photoshop for print. possible?

Asked by windex (2932points) October 26th, 2008

Hello,
I have an image where the darkest parts are 100/100/100/100 but I want to change it to 60/40/40/100.
Is there ANY way to do this in photoshop.
I want to make sure the printer is happy when I send it out.
Too much ink coverage!!! :(
thanks

Edit the individual channels.

Good question. Something I never thought of.

Some interesting thoughts and approaches to this problem.

The gist is that you need to have a profile (LAB or RGB) that has an ink limit set at what ever your max is, and then convert the image to that color space and back to CMYK again after working up any necessary tweaks.

I would work on a duplicate image first and keep the original as backup.

First thing I would try is to convert the image to RGB… then go to EDIT>COLOR SETTINGS and change the CMYK ‘Working Spaces’ to Custom CMYK. Another window will pop up and I would select the GCR Black Generation to MEDIUM.

Then convert the RGB image to CMYK so the setting would take effect.

If that didn’t work you might have to adjust the individual channel.
