Medicare is for retired people or for people who became disabled before the age of 22. Your daughter may be eligible for medicaid. How you apply depends on your state. Doesn’t the military pick up your child health care?

You and your dependents should be covered by the military. Jufi is right, Medicare is for the elderly or disabled.

Medicare, as Judi states, if for the elderly and disabled.

Medicaid is for people w/ extremely limited income.

Will you and your family no longer qualify for care thru the VA? If not and you do not qualify for Medicaid and your daughter is not disabled, you might want to see if your daughter qualifies for SCHIP

See this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Children’s_Health_Insurance_Program

Best wishes and thank you for your service.

One becomes eligible for Medicare A (Drs), B (Hospitals) and D (Drugs) at age 65, whether you are disabled or not.

@gail;
My son actually gets medicare, not medicaid, because he became disabled before he turned 22.

Snoopy's avatar

@gailcalled Persons under age 65 who qualify w/ a disability are also on Medicare…

Judi's avatar

Usually under 85 the get medicaid.

Snoopy's avatar

I think Judi means under 65:)

Judi's avatar

I did mean 65. Sorry.

Thanks to those whom already answered my question. I have a son, and from what I can gather the military does not cover anybody once your done with your service. Like most military we don’t make much, so while I try to land a decent career, my fam might need some care and insurance.

@sanbuu what state are you in? I’m asking because it’s not apparent in your profile, and different areas have different programs. For instance if you don’t qualify for medicaid and you live in Florida, you may qualify for the Medically Needy Program.

sanbuu's avatar

@scamp, currenty I’m a Texas resident, but I will he moving to California.

Judi's avatar

In California there is a program for kids that is really inexpensive. It’s called Healthy Families Click for their website.
