Has anyone ever purchased wine online?

Asked by mamasu (1380points) October 28th, 2008

I was just looking around the internet for info re: my favorite wine. I’m a big fan of Kris pinot grigio. Prices are much better online than they are locally. Has anyone ever purchased wine online? Are there pitfalls to be aware of? Benefits? Anything I should know ahead of time? Any preferred vendors?

i’ve bought Absinthe online, from Europe. Had no problem. Just make sure you’re dealing with a reputable company.

I used to be a member of the California Wine Finders club (I think the name may have changed since). I thought it was great—we never had any complaints at all. We dropped the membership to save a little money, but I miss it.

Edit—I think this is it: http://www.wineinsiders.com/.

Really, the most important factor in deciding where to buy any wine is to determine how it was stored. The large oneline wine stores are able to have lower prices because of the volume they sell but who can vouch for how the wine was stored in their warehouse?
Also, UPS or the USPS isn’t going to guarantee that the wine was held at “cellar temperature” during transport.
I’d suggest trying an inexpensive PG from your local wine shop.

I suspect that many internet wine sellers have a policy like this one from Wine Insiders: “If you’re not 100% delighted with the wines we’ve chosen for you, we’ll refund the total cost of your shipment. No questions asked. You can always order with confidence, knowing we stand firmly behind every bottle we bring you.”
