Can a cat be shipped overnight via FedEx domestically in the US?

Asked by mjoyce (503points) October 28th, 2008

I have shipped other small animals (Fish, Corals, Etc) via FedEx overnight with no ill effects. Google yielded mixed results. What do you think? Can it be done? Is it cruel? If you think its cruel, how is it any different than it traveling on an airline or other courier service?

OMG, I hope there are no PETA people on here! The difference is that on airlines they hand carry the animals on and off the planes and have a designated area for holding them on board. Even then, I don’t think a plane trip can be a barrel of monkeys for an animal. Yes, I think it is cruel.

“FedEx Express does not accept live-animal shipments as part of its regular-scheduled service and does not transport household pets such as dogs, cats, birds and hamsters.”

I wouldn’t ship a cat. Most breeders won’t ship cats. I doubt they even ship cats.

@mjoyce is adopting a cat from this animal rescue group.

Just fly out there yourself. You need a vacation anyway. Durham > Temecula.

You can ship an animal on an airline like United or Delta. Just go to the ticket counter and they will show you how to do it. It is not cheap, but not as expensive as a ticket in coach either.

but what if I put a handle with care sticker on the box ?????? Okay seriously, that rule is slightly lame. I’m sure the cat would be fine on such a trip.

gailcalled's avatar

Wrong. The cat would probably have a nervous breakdown. Cats are notoriously bad travelers, even in cars. (That is why Milo has moved in with me).

@mjoyce; Why not adopt a cat from a shelter near home rather than one so far away? There are beautiful cats begging for good homes in every shelter.

You can UPS a horse. Seriously.

skabeep's avatar

i think a handle with care sticker and a ^this side up^ will suffice for cat smuggling. oh and dont forget a few pieces of packing foam for it to play with

AlfredaPrufrock's avatar

just don’t let the dog pack the box…

asmonet's avatar

@mjoyce: Of course the cat would be fine. Flying around in that box must be good for it’s balance, cats land on their feet, he’ll be in his own personal mosh pit.

Do it.

If you send this cat via FedEx you will be breaking Federal Laws. The cat will die. You will most likely be caught and go to jail. A lot of the freight is X RAYED! Even if it isn’t, the shipping process is not safe for live animals like cats. A horse is huge and shipped completely different. Please do not try this! The same goes for UPS!

missingbite's avatar

If you put a cat through the x-ray machine at the airport yes. If you are talking about the x-ray machine at your vet’s office. No. DO NOT SHIP A CAT ILLEGALLY. And I don’t even like cats.

skabeep's avatar

if you do, let us know if it worked

gailcalled's avatar

It won’t. I promise you. Cats need fresh food, fresh water, and a clean litter box some distance from either. Don’t even suggest it in jest. Milo gets sick and unhappy in his crate when we drive to the vet’s and back.

Mrjoyce; Why not get an RV and carefully drive from Durham > Temecula > Durham.

MY daughter crated her small (40 lb) dog and flew him from Provicence to Toronto. No delays, no rerouting, nice warm day; she could hear the dog barking, howling and baying from her seat. He was in the baggage hold. (The other passengers heard him also.)

There ares several services which would probably cost much less than renting an RV. here is a listing of a few:

Also here are some tips to keep in mind:

Do you have any idea how they toss around those boxes and throw them on the conveyor belts, toss them in with other packages on top of them, go through non-climate controlled conditions….what an AWFUL idea…I truly hope you haven’t done this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And seriously, a “handle with care” sticker??? You actually think they pay attention to those??? There’s something a little crazy in the coconut, sir. I’m sorry. Just please, don’t do this.

We flew both our cats from Nashville to Houston when we moved and they did just fine. No ill effects whatsoever. So I don’t see why everyone is up in arms about flying a cat.
