Permalinks. What are they for and how do they work?

Asked by Sueanne_Tremendous (11290points) October 29th, 2008

Sorry for such a dumb question. I’m sure everyone understands permalinks but I certainly don’t. What are they for?

A permalink is a link that allows you to go directly to the post in question. So on a blog, each post might move down on the main page, eventually disappearing into the archives, but a permalink would allow you to go directly to that blog post (and often only that blog post).

On Fluther, it allows you to link someone directly to the comment you’d like them to see. The link will take them to the question page and move them down the browser to the appropriate comment.

Thanks Pixie, but how do I get the permalink I want into another thread? For instance, if I click on the “P” next to your comment it takes me right back to your comment.

Right click it and click copy link location, then paste it wherever you want. Or if you want you can right click and bookmark instead.
