What is the best cat food you feed your kitties?

Asked by stevenb (3836points) November 4th, 2008 from iPhone

I have an 18 year old and a one year old. My 18 year old seems to be getting sick often now. I have switched from Iams because they changed their formula and she didn’t like it anymore. She ate that for 16 years! Now I can’t find good food to keep her healthy. She throws up and get diarhea a lot. She has never been sick ever until now. Do you think it’s food only?
My vet had us try a prescription food, with the same bad problems. She is starting to lose weight and look bad. Please help!
The one year old also doesn’t seem to like the new foods. I am trying Nutro max now, but again bad things are happening. I hope you all can help me with my sweet cat. I can’t lose her yet.

You haven’t mentioned what tests your vet has performed. A cat that age should certainly have kidney and liver function checked (keep in mind, kidney values won’t show any increases until at least 80% of kidney function has been lost). You should also check her thyroid levels – older cats often become hyperthyroid and lose weight in spite of a good appetite. A thorough work up (radiographs and bloodwork) is your best bet. An appropriate diet can be recommended based on the results of the tests. At the very least, she should be on a senior or reduced protein diet.

Any good quality diet is fine for the youngster (Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams, etc). Be careful about bouncing around between brands – you can develop a picky eater that way. Pick a good diet and stick with it.

If your kitty is not sick, try a higher protein food. One that I like is Evo.

I feed raw, but I don’t know about switching a cat that age to raw. If the Evo works out for you, you might move the younger cat to raw food after the older one passes on (which I hope is not soon).

My cats love Meow Mix. It didn’t get recalled, is made in America and doesn’t contain other cats that have been put down.

My babies really like Science Diet. I don’t know how animals that lick their own butts can be so fussy about what they put in their mouths.

You cannot just change a food willy nilly. You need to slowly mix in the new food with the old over a period of 7–10 days. That way kitty’s tummy will adjust.

I’ve tried Wellness and Innova, which are both great. I hear Natural Balance is good too.

I do try to mix slowly, but she still ralphs all over. It’s like she eats too much and then chucks it back up in a wet kitty food log. Yuck! I will have to ask what the vet did this last time. I know she gave her a leucemia shot this last time for some reason. Any idea why she would need that at her age? Thanks for all the help.

An 18 year old cat should get rabies vaccinations (as required by law) and nothing else. It’s an accepted standard of care that geriatirc pets do not need to be boostered annually, if at all.

I strongly recommend that she she have a full work up consisting of bloodwork (including a thyroid panel) and radiographs.

My daughter did a huge amount of research; so we use this.

Felidae

But our guy is 6 yrs old, healthy,self-reglates and does not have feline leukemia. Your vet should be telling you what the shot is for.

And everyone is correct.. Do not change food abruptly.

one of my cats is very sensitive. I feed him the science diet sensitive stomach formula. it seems to be the only food he can keep down. but i’m thinking of switching him over to their adult formula, hopefully it will not upset him.
