Can you share the facts?

2late2be's avatar

Actually my husband think so, now that Obama was elected president, he thinks he is the Devil, LOL!

Bluefreedom's avatar

I’m kind of curious what facts and evidence your professor has. Could you share those with us please?

And no, I really don’t think the world is going to end in 2012.

laureth's avatar

People have periodically though the world was going to end. It hasn’t yet. I see no reason why 2012 is more than just another arbitrary apocalypse date in the lunatic Outlook calendar.

jividenm's avatar

he mentioned the mayan calander among other things. he showed us a youtube video also, i know this has very little creditability- but it makes you think. ill try to find it.

lapilofu's avatar

The only solid fact I’ve ever heard for this theory is that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012. However I’ve also heard of this book.

It’s easy to get caught up in romantic theories of impending doom predicted by ancient civilizations who were somehow privy to knowledge that we cannot access. But I’ll believe it when I see it.

(Or at least when I see some compelling evidence that isn’t just about someone’s calendar.)

fireside's avatar

I remember hearing about a world war in 1997, the end of the world in 2000 and the end of the world again in 2001. So there is nothing to make me think that the world will end on 12/21/12

Jividenm – tell your professor that the Mayan calculator can still continue to be used beyond 2012, it is just that the Mayans stopped making calculations beyond thousands of years in their future.

PupnTaco's avatar

It’s 100% bullshit. See any of several previous discussions on this – search for 2012.

fireside's avatar

What was in the you tube video?

Bluefreedom's avatar

Thanks for easing my mind on this, PupnTaco. I was pretty worried for all of about 46 seconds or until your post showed up. :o)

Here I am to save the day

GAMBIT's avatar

This world wont end until NASA builds another one on another planet so the elite can survive. Don’t worry you still have some time.

jrpowell's avatar

Is The History Channel showing the Mayan calendar show again?

lapilofu's avatar

With all due respect, I think it’s time to reevaluate what qualifies as “pretty solid facts.”

jividenm's avatar

my professor had a slew of other things, i cant remember them all, he made a good argument. i think he just wanted to jolt our thinking habits.

PupnTaco's avatar

And what qualifies as a “professor” – and a “question.”

“Ugh, not 2012 again,” I thought.

laureth's avatar

Jolting thinking habits is a great thing for professors to do.

PupnTaco's avatar

Only if he was teaching you to question everything you hear out of his mouth.

fireside's avatar

What class was this in?

jrpowell's avatar

@laureth :: Isn’t using nonsense to “Jolt” thinking habits a bad thing if people actual believe the nonsense?

fireside's avatar

not if it was a creative writing class…

jrpowell's avatar

For some reason I doubt it was.

jividenm's avatar

enviornmental science..

jividenm's avatar

if it makes a difference hes from romainia.

and speaks broken english.

fireside's avatar

oh man
Why bother to have an Environmental Science class if there won’t be an environment in 4 years?

laureth's avatar

@johnpowell: Possibly, but hopefully, if they’re thinkin’, they can perceive it as nonsense.

Perhaps I have too high expectations.

basp's avatar

Do I think the world will come to an end in 2012?

Only if Sarah Palin is elected as president.

jividenm's avatar

oh, shes not that bad.

basp's avatar

you could be right about that, jiv. I guess when compared to her running mate or the current president, she doesn’t look so bad.
(please note the teasing tone of voice here :) )

shilolo's avatar

Well, I’m resigned to my fate, I guess I’ll just have to live by Rodney Dangerfield’s creedo at the end of this clip.

lapilofu's avatar

seVen: That is a fascinating website. Lurve for linking something so interesting.

jvgr's avatar

Absolutely, if not before (or after)

mea05key's avatar

Its all because of the Mayan calender that stops counting in 2012. The Mayans never thought that they will be able to live to see human progressing until year 2012 thats why they find it unnecessary to count beyond 2012

Siren's avatar

There are a lot of prophesies and predictions out there, some are quite fascinating and give certain celestial events as “signs of the end of days”. The popular religions have their predictions, if you follow them, even a count down via different prophesies. None of them seem to refer to a specific date except your Mayan calendar, as you mentioned. If you do a Google search under “end of days” or “day of judgment” you see all kinds of information under Wikipedia. Maybe that’s some of what your professor was referring to as well.

Personally, I hope not! 4 years is not a long time for us to get our affairs in order.

joeysefika's avatar

Has anyone ever thought that the Mayans just got lazy, I mean they lived a long time ago and making a calender go so high seems pointless. If we had to do it all by hand, without computers I’m sure we’d give up after calculating 500 years let alone more than that.

funkdaddy's avatar

My calendar stops in December… this could be bad…

Siren's avatar

@joeysefika: funny

Jack79's avatar

I’m pretty sure it will, though there were supposed to be signs last year that never came. So we might still have a few more centuries to go :)

CMaz's avatar

I hope so, tired of waiting.

jobin's avatar

The Maya Calendar ends at 11:11 GMT on December 21, 2012. This is a fact. It is the last of the five cycles. The end of each of the first four cycles were devastating to the earth, causing extinctions of many species at each event. The end of the last cycle will be the worst by far. So now is a time for Prayer. Start now, so God will have mercy on you in these coming end of days. Read this article byStephen Yulish regarding end of the Maya calendar December 21, 2012. More proof of devastating earth changes to come.

laureth's avatar

So you’re saying the Mayans had it in good with YHWH?

CMaz's avatar

Not the last cycle. Just going to the next.

Sort of like us going from 1899 to 1900 – 1999 to 2000

dankgun's avatar

December 2012 is not the same as Revelation 20:12
The Maya is different than the Messiah.
No comparison

dubdchris's avatar

the worst case senario is we’ll end but the world will never end

ABushMed's avatar

Ok, all of these cycles the Mayans predicted ended ages, the age of ice, the age of fire, the age of large animals killing men, etc… We currently are living in the culmination of the age of Earthquakes…funny how they knew that too!! I do not believe the world is going to end, i truly believe we are entering a new age of existence, there must be chaos before enlightenment can occur and tribulation before edification can ensue. I believe the new age will be one of enlightenment and heightened spiritual evolution. It will be the age of individualization and reintegration with the global mind and a reconnection with the planet. Sorry for the new age jumbo mumbo but this is what i believe. Peace and love y’all!
