The Iphone 3G has GPS-a which will let Google maps zero in on your location AND, support for the faster 3G data network. The old Iphone only supports the Edge network, much slower internet browsing.

there is no 2g. The “3g” refers to at&t’s wireless network which is replacing their EDGE network. The iPhone 3g is actually the 2nd gen phone. Beyond that, computergenius is absolutely correct.

The GPS map function is incredibly useful. That is new over the first generation (2.5g network).

The displays are also calibrated to “feel” warmer than the old ones in terms of color.

The back is also made of black or white plastic (1st gen made of aluminum).

Some people prefer the 2g mobile phone but I love my 3g.
There are a few obvious differences, for example, the 2g’s metal body makes it a little heavier than the 3g and it also has slower browsing. The headphone jack is much better than on the 2g and it is also available in 8 and 16gb versions.
As for the sound, well in most mobile phone reviews I have read the consumers seemed to think that both mobile phones were identical in sound, but of course, that’s something that you would have to judge for yourself. http://www.vozavi.co.uk/mobile-phone-handset_c7_10_1.html
