Damn! Dang! Darn! I broke my iTouch screen! Now what?

Asked by jtvoar16 (2171points) November 8th, 2008

So I just dropped my touch 1 inch onto my floor. A piece of quartz chipped the very teeny, tinny side of the glass, sending a hairline fracture threw it.
Everything still works on it, but it looks like a redneck owns it, I want to fix it, I know how to take the touch apart, I know how to secure the glass in place, however I do not know where to go for the glass.
The guys at the apple store said they can’t sell me the glass, but they refured me to some website, like applerummors.com or something like that, I don’t remember what it’s name was.
Anyone know where I can go to get the glass and fabric?

did you buy the extended warranty?

@cdwccrn
From what I’ve heard, AppleCare never covers screens.

ok. That’s good to know.

If you take it to one of those third party partner Apple repair stores, they should be able to offer your some advice or even help you get it repaired.

The Apple warranty doesn’t cover drops.

Warranties cover defects that occur in the product at the fault of the manufacturer.

You need insurance to cover accidental damage that isn’t the fault of the manufacturer.

If you have home contents insurance, you could claim it on that.

My advice; get it repaired by Apple or an Apple-Authorised dealer. Parts of the product are sealed with glue, and if you screw up in the process of repairing it, there’s nothing you can do.

Authorised Service Providers are often cheaper than Apple, and you get to keep your warranty too in-case it stops working later.

I’m not worried about the repair, I just need the glass. I have taken my touch apart many times, just to prove I could, but now I have a legitimate reason to take it apart! Besides the battery crapping out on me.

My kid has been using an iPhone with a cracked screen for over a year. You can either learn to live with it or spend some money to get it repaired. Not all Authorized Service Providers do iPhone/Touch, though.

Maybe you can find a really high-end glass shop that could duplicate the screen, though that sounds unlikely. Got a big university or observatory nearby that does optics?

Sell it on eBay and buy a new one. You can get pretty close to the price of a new one.

Can you post some pictures of it? It might be covered by warranty. Is there any other damages besides the screen? And btw, it’s called iPod Touch, not iTouch….

jtvoar16's avatar

I call it iTouch cause that is easier. But, I don’t think it will be, considering I have torn it appart, painted it, jailbroke it, scratched my name into the back, and reeteched the logo to read: Apple: We screw you over for buying our products!

joeysefika's avatar

Sounds like a redneck already does own it. Dude, what else do you think is going to happen if you don’t take care of your products. Also why would you buy an iPod if you think apple screws people over?

Why don’t you just buy a new glass/digitizer on ebay. The sell them on there all day 24/7.
If you already know how to take it apart, then it should be a no-brainer for you to fix it.

wilhel1812's avatar

Ok, that made me leave this thread.

THANK YOU nexstar5! I have been waiting for someone to tell me that. I didn’t realize ebay would have those! Thank you, I am on my way there to order one!
Thank you again!
