Is the white on the outside of brie wax or a mould like substance?

Asked by HalfScottishGuy (92points) November 10th, 2008

I know cheeses are often covered in one of these 2 things. but I have always wondered and never been quite sure, it seems too soft and…weird to be wax, yet to clean and smooth to be mould…

The white exterior of Brie is mold.

MMMMMMMMMM – I lived in France and was assured that it is cornstarch, not mold, although many cheeses do have an exterior of mold.
